Greetings.  Having a 6920, I still recall how light our M16s were.  What Colt is the lightest?  Is there a significant weight difference between the 6520 and 6920?

According to Colt, 16" carbine weights without a magazine:

R6001/R6420/R6520/AR6520 - 5.80 Pounds

Do you think the 6920 weight is understated.

The MT6400C weight must be the club of a comp adding to the numbers?

I double checked the LE6920 weight.  Colt says 5.95 pounds.

Not sure what you mean on the MT6400C.

They all look pretty similar (eta: 6520 vs 6920).  Are there any older models on the used market that would be lighter, like the M16A1?

Could the MT6400 be heavy under the handguards?

That 1.35 pounds difference is hard to find.

The barrel is light under the handguards. Additional weight comes from the full length receiver extension on the dummy telestock.

I believe that my Colt 6520 with compact ACOG is just under 6.5 lbs.  It is noticeably lighter than my 6920 or 6721.

How about the R6530?  Described as a lightweight carbine.

eta:  Also, will a full stock always weight more than the adjustable option?   What would be the weight difference?

It is a recent production LE model with 4-position collapseable stock and thin handguards.  I have kept it bone stock except for the addition of a Tango Down pistol grip and TA44R-2 ACOG.

Nice setup; lightweight, 1:7 twist, ACOG.   If you don't already, consider a vortex for the occasional night shooting.

Anyone know the weight on the old SP1 carbine?  The R6001?  I'm guessing that has to be the ligtest of all with the pencil barrel.

6933

If you mean non-NFA and currently available, I'd bet on the 6520

Oh, and from the Colt site

6520: 5.8 lbs
R0977: 5.9 lbs (14.5" barrel version of 6920)

I currently have a vortex on my 6721 recce-ish carbine.  I found the additional weight of the H-bar a bit prohibitive for carry purposes so I turned it into more of bench rest shooter by adding a D.D. 12.0 rail w/ LaRue lo-pro gas block, Harris bipod and TAO1-NSN ACOG w/ Troy BUIS'.  It is an absolute tack driver in that configuration.  I have both read and heard that the Vortex will improve accuracy/groupings and I can certainly say that it does not degrade them.  It does appear to be somewhat louder than a standard A2 hider.

You have to make one.  I bought a Colt 6920 stripped upper and had ADCO change it out when they installed the DD rail.  That's the reason for the DD 9.0 and the Troy front BUIS.  Ideal for me would have been to retain the stock FSB and use a DD 9.5 FSP, but without the "F" marked FSB I couldn't guarantee my rear BUIS would work out.  It's not so bad though, the shaved FSB and Troy combined weigh less than the stock FSB alone.

Bushmaster Carbon-15 Carbine claimed weight w/o Magazine - 5.77 lbs
Colt LE6520 Carbine w/o Magazine -  5.8 lbs

And the MSRP is virtually the same.

Don't need no stinking Carbon-15!

I could have purchased one of those Lightweight lowers complete with A2 stock for $325.00 a couple of months ago.

Like most deals....I was a day late and a dollar short...LOL

These are 6320 lowers.  I got a new one from SAW for $400 a while back. The lightweight barrel was 1/9 twist. No more of these available (new from SAW, anyway).

Thanks,

redfisher,  if the bbl does not have the M203 notches, then is it considered a pencil bbl?

How many Colt barrel contours are there?  More than these?

Standard
Original thin barrel style.

A2
Later style of barrel that was tapered at the front sight to thicken the exposed barrel.

HBAR
Same thickness the enitre length through, rather than just the exposed section.

Stepped HBAR
M203 launcher cuts or steps.

No expert, but from memory...........

Government Profile

Lightweight. (pencil)

M4 (I guess what you label as stepped) M4 is light under HG, .650 (IIRC)  at FSB, stepped for M203, and stepped up forward that.

There is also a Heavy version of the M4 that is heavy under the HG

There is a stainless 24" used and may have its own unique profile and maybe even a Bull barrel

Check w/ Ekie, or AR15barrels.com (Randall Rausch?)

Manufacturers listed wieght and actual are two different things.

There are many many barrel profiles, for example the Model 01 barrel is quite a bit lighter then the Model 02 barrel.  Various different HBAR profiles have been used, etc, etc.

Ekie,  That's what I was thinking, and you confirmed it.  I wonder what the weight difference would be between a full and a collapsible stock?

Depends on the stock, there are many variation of those too.  The original green painted fiberglass buttstocks are pretty light.

I do not have a scale presice enough to check it. Curious though.
