I have a colt 7.62x39 marked upper receiver, flattop with no numbering, "4" over the cloverleaf, mated to a colt M4 14.5 barrel with smith brake.. Everytime I hit the range, all the lookieloo's say they've never seen an M4 type upper receiver from colt thats marked 7.62x39.  Yes... for those wondering, I am running colt .223 guts ;)

Can anyone provide any info on the upper?  Thanks.. e

Colt made 7.62x39 AR15s and also sold a conversion kit in 7.62x39.  The uppers from the conversion kits wetre roll stamped 7.62x39.

Does not surprise me.  I have had in my hands a Match Target post-ban fresh from the factory with the M4 feed ramps and sear relief cut in the upper.  Also have had in my hands a 7.62X39 blue label, except with an A2 carry handle.  It had the sear relief in the upper, but was blocked in the lower.  Only the lower was marked 7.62.  Could someone have swapped the upper?

When Colt first started selling upper receiver conversion kits in the early/mid-90s, they rollmarked the caliber on the left side of the upper receiver. These can be found marked as either "COLT 223" or "COLT 7.62x39". I have examples of both of these. The 7.62x39 marked upper receivers were used on the R6850DC (16" bbl) and R6851DC (20" bbl) 7.62x39 conversion kits.

thanks for all the info... This receiver has the m4 feed ramps, "4" over the cloverleaf.. rollstamped 7.62x39.  When I bought it before the PRK started screwing with everything, the owner said it was basically an m4 receiver, just marked 7.62x39.  I have it coupled to a match target lower with a2 stock.  Always grabs looks...

Once again, thanks for the 411

My "COLT 7.62x39" marked flat top upper receiver has both a "4" stamped over the clover leaf and has the M4 feed ramps. My "COLT 223" marked flat top upper receiver has neither of those features. Just another of Colt's odd idiosyncrasies, I 'spose.

They seem to have put guns together with whatever parts were on hand during times of weakness.  I doubt that we'll ever see a comprehensive story of what happened.  They seem to have settled down in the last couple of years.
