I'll try to reiterate what I had typed last night - before my wife shut the phucking computer down when I wasn't looking...
First, the ammo consumed: ~720 55/62grn Barnaul/Tula, 27/3 M855/M856, 20 ROTA frangible, 20 55grn Ballistic tip, ~40 55grn Q3131A.
Number of ammo-related malfunctions: ZERO.
Number of magazine-related F'ups: three (my buddy used a couple POS USA aluminum 30s).
The afternoon was cool & overcast, in the 70s, with little wind (berms). - A perfect range day!!!
I tested the real accuracy by using the following primitive, yet effective method: I used a reconditioned 3x10 Simmons on an ARMS #5, an old KMC RIS bipod, and a folded towel under the butthook.
With less than 4 hours of sleep & five Pepsi Ones (I was up all night catchin' badguys), THE GUN COSISTENTLY PRINTED 1.5MOA WITH TZZ M885 AMMO!!!!!!!!!! I didn't believe the first two groups, so I did it three more time to prove to myself that I wasn't hallucinating (sleep deprivation & all...). Note that there were no called flyers, too.
I had a total of five other people shoot the gun. Two brothers, who cut their teeth on Daddy's Class III collection, one brother & sister (both Southpaws), and one... ah, well, a friend of mine, a former USAF SP who has a pechant of dressing up like a carport commando while at the range...
There were three AR15s of varying configurations and one Mini-14 used as control group. Sighting systems included iron sights, 4x32ACOG, 1x24 RX01 Reflex, and a RX01NSN.
All shot very well, with the brother/sister Southpaw combo (having never shot longarms ever before) doing suprisingly well! All were very impressed with the weapon, and all found the gun easier to put on target than the ARs. - I would attribute this to the inherent center balance of the bullpup configuration mated with the RX01NSN.
Unfortunately, the BMAS folding front site I received was too tall, and the replacement had not yet arrived from Maine. I will do another comparison with irons only in the future...
I had everyone take a few USGI 30s apiece and burn them through the gun as fast as they could get on target. Over 10 minutes, over 600 rounds went through the gun, making it quite hot towards the front end (irrelevant due to the KAC foregrip on the 6 o'clock rail), distractingly warm on the URA where your face mounts.
-I'm not concerned by this, as when in the hell am I going to put over half a case of ammo through the damn thing at once? I don't think even our most paranoid WTSHTF folks would.
After the gun was heated up, I noticed the safety getting a little difficult to engage/disengage - due to hot plastic on plastic? Idunno. -Again, not a concern.
The gun never faltered once, save for the POS aluminum USA mag poochscrews.
It is as dirty as any of my ARs that had ONLY ~30 rounds through them. And, for those not aware, the Russian ammo is EXTREMELY filthy.
Overall, I came away suprised - even a little disturbed - especially about the accuracy of the damn thing. This warrants further testing with match-type ammunition (not to forget eight hours of sleep and decaf before rangetime
Good Gods, My department could have one gun that'ld serve as an entry, perimeter, and precision rifle in every friggin' car!!!!
Gotta work on that paper for the Chief.........
P.S.: My ARs now play second fiddle to my "M17Sk"
