I ready to purchase a Vortex Viper, but which one?  My intended target range will be from 100 to possibly 300 yards.  I'm looking at the Viper 4-12x40 PA model with the BDC reticle.  Will this scope have enough magnification for 300 yards?

My 4-12 X 40 is great @ 200yrds. I do not get to shot @ 300yrds to often but fell it would be OK.
Going w/ higher mag could hurt you in the closer ranges.. 4-12 is a good middle of the road choice.

The 4-12x40 should work fine at 300, but it wouldn't hurt to have the 20x of the 6.5-20x Viper either. I guess it would depend on if you think you'll need the lower magnification ever. If you might use it for hunting in the woods I'd probably opt for the 4-12x40 since the 4x magnification will give you a much better field of view for close range shots you might take in those conditions. But if you think you'll strictly be doing target shooting then I'd think about going for the 6.5-20x50.
