Have a question for you folks that may also be assembling the Lowers you purchased recently.

I have had my Stealth Upper and Lower sitting in the boxes until I got all the parts to do the assembly.

Startred putting things together the other day and encountered what you see in the photos...

A pretty pronounced gap near the buffer tube area...the receivers lock up very nicely everywhere else with no wobble but...

This is my first build with Larue Steath Recvrs so my question is...is this common?

Have quite a few other ARs that Ive built and never encountered this before...and my PredatAR has no such gap.

Will be running this rifle suppressed and I can only imagine that I will have some issues with gas blowing out this gap.  Am I incorrect?

Your thoughts and input appreciated...

Thanks...

It's possible that it's ok. What you have to look at is what happens when you shut the upper on the lower. Is the rear of the carrier pressing the buffer in? If not the buffer retainer is going to take a beating when the rifle cycles. It will chew up the face of the buffer and eventually break the retainer. It should press it in just enough  to take the pressure off of the retainer.

Damn that is a big gap. I would not be happy if that were my rifle especially with the money spent on the receivers.

+1 this is odd for larue. But I'll take that lower if you're unhappy with it! Trying to find one all over but no luck.

Yeah, probably has something to do with the astronomical price.

Update....

I shot an email to the folks at Larue...and while they assure me there will be no performance issues associated with the gap...to be honest I am a little disappointed.

I will reserve any further comment until I get the rifle assembled and on the range.  Need to run it thru the paces and fire it suppressed to know for sure if that gap is an issue other than a small cosmetic eyesore.

I hope it isnt...

If anyone has any further perspective...feel free to let er rip...

Thanks...

And no...I ain't selling it...

I'm not sure I'd be happy with that... that's a lot of money for a rifle. It shouldn't have that gap. I'm sure it'll run just fine... but still You paid for a premium product and that isn't a premium fit.

Have you tried fitting a different lower to the Stealth upper? Or a different upper to the Larue Lower? At least it will show you which piece might be off

Thats a great idea...

While I have not tried that, I can tell you that the email I received from Support at Larue indicated that they manufacture their uppers with looser tolerances in order to marry them up with other manufactures lowers...which makes sense.

The whole purpose of my post here was to see if anyone here had similar results with Larue stealth upper on Larue stealth lower builds...so I could see if my result is typical or if I may have something that is an exception to the norm.

Mine all fit exceptionally snug.  No light showing.  I just took my older LT uppers off their LT lowers and put them on my new LT lowers (purchased the last release) and all is snug and tight.

Try swapping some uppers and lowers and let us know what that looks like.

Never in my 15 years of building and using AR's have I seen that.

I gotta say man, I wouldn't be happy with that at all and I would demand an exchange if you bought the upper (or lower... even though Larue doesn't sell lowers) through Larue. Although I'm sure you wouldn't have to demand it. That's definitely not normal and it shouldn't fit that poorly.

I've never had to exchange anything or return anything from Larue but their return policy says they will return anything unused within 15 days, especially if it's defective, and I consider this defective. Piss on the "it's a tool, it's cosmetic, it doesn't matter" bullshit. Those are expensive uppers and lowers and as another user said, you paid a premium price for a defective product. I'd mate them up with other uppers and lowers, find out which one has the defect and send it back. You'll be happy you did and you may always regret it if you don't.

Just my two cents. Oh and I love Larue to death and I've never had a single issue with their products but that there is a problem.

Looks like crap to me. I'd also be pissed. No excuse for that if it's billet upper and lower receivers from the same mfg.

Will check the fit against a few of my other ARs...I have a suspicion its the upper...we shall see...

Whats got me puzzeled is why the folks at Larue took a look at the photos I sent them and said it was normal...

Since some of you have chimed in and said your builds with Larue on Larue Stealth uppers and lowers had NO such issues, something is amiss...

If its normal why is it none of you here have seen anything like it?

Had hoped maybe ML or someone else from Larue would see the thread and comment...

I'm surprised ML hasn't commented on here and told you to send it back. He can't think that's on par for  LaRue quality.

I can certainly see where you guys are coming from in regards to Mark chiming in, but if you stop and think about it, this isn't really the place to address issues.  I know Mark is on here during the day off and on, but in the past, he doesn't really address issues such as this often.   What he does do is provide the best damn customer service in the industry.  LT makes it clear that they will take care of you if you aren't happy..... And they do, time and time again.   If Mark spent all day looking for threads about issues that he has already provided a solution for by means of a RA, or such, that would defeat the purpose of being efficient.   I'm not saying he doesn't appreciate you as a customer, nor does he believe your problem is not worth a response, but there are other ways to handle it.  I totally get your frustration, but there are two sides to the coin.  Again, if you aren't happy.... They will take care of you.

I would have swapped uppers and lowers days ago.   I'm sure you are busy or would have done so already.   When you get it narrowed down, box that baby up (lower or upper) include a nice note on what's wrong and what you would like done, and boom!  Problem solved.   It really is that easy.

Waiting on Mark to chime in will only waste time.   Their merchandise return form is on their website if you need it.   Keep us posted.   Good luck!

Thanks for the perspective...and yes I will narrow down which reciever is the culprit once I get back home next week

Problem is, even when I do that, I am basically stuck...

Two things that you may have missed in my prior posts...

I purchased the Upper and Lower months ago...and while they have never been "used or fired"...they both fall outside the return policys 30 day limit so I cant just "send them back".

and

like I also said, I sent an email to LaRue with photos asking them about the issue...and was told it was "normal".

Here is exactly what they wrote me back...

"I spoke to the Gun Room and showed them your pictures. They say that the gap is normal for the upper and lower. The complete rifles, are of course, built with a tighter tolerance. The Stealth billet uppers are made a bit more “generous” as they are designed to fit the wide variety of lowers."

So thats where I am at...

I am in no way trying to cast a disparate light on LaRue...they have taken good care of me in the past. Over and beyond really.
Purpose of my posts here have been to gather some information and try to find a solution, nothing more...

It never came across as you were being negative towards LaRue.   I think you post was clear in that you were just looking for information.

I caught that the email said this was normal, and while I hate to argue, unless I have four uppers that aren't normal, then this isn't normal.   But, normal or not, you aren't happy and this exact situation is why many many people, including myself continue to buy LaRue products.  They will take care of you.

I know you have had these parts for over thirty days, but you haven't been using them, and you purchased them new from LaRue... If they will take care of people buying Chinese clones, broken ARMS mounts, and operator errors resulting in damage, they will certainly get you squared away on this situation.

I'd be willing to bet it's the upper.  When you confirm that, I would send both your upper and lower back with a polite note regarding the obvious issue of why you aren't completely happy and ask if they would be willing to replace your upper with one that has a more customary LaRue fit.   This is, once again, just one of the many reasons we are customers of LaRue.

Don't ever think you are "stuck".

I dunno... a little grease on the lower curves of the upper,  little black RTV on the corresponding surfaces of the lower, it'd be like bedding the stock on a bolt gun, only cosmetic.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's issues like this that caused larue to stop selling stripped lowers in the first place. When they assemble complete rifles they can pair uppers and lowers that fit nicely with each other. What you have is a stacked tollerence that is within the acceptable spec for function but unacceptable visually.

"As everyone knows, on products we make, our guarantee is "If you ain't happy, then we ain't happy".

pretty cut and dry that he ain't happy

If they wouldn't send it out the door as a complete rifle why would they expect you to be happy with it.
