I ordered a PredatOBR before they were suitcase guns. I received it in November and its sweet. Work has me hooked up and I've hardly even shot the thing, about 30 rounds through it. Its heavier than I thought it would be and I really don't need or want the ability to break it down. I've been thinking about trying to trade it off for a PredatAR for the weight savings and to possibly end up with a little cash out of the deal. I'm talking about 7.62s here.
I'm curious what you guys think about the differences. What do I need to consider? What are the differences in the early and late model PredatARs? Do you think I'll be able to get my moneys worth in the difference on a trade? Thanks for the help. NOTE: I haven't made a decision as to whether or not I want to make a trade. Please don't send me any messages making offers. If I decide to trade I'll post it in the EE. |

IMHO id keep the tOBR over a tAR. The only advantage I can see of tAR is weight and unless you are a soldier or hunting guide that humps a rifle all day long....
I suspect tOBRs will have better resale value simply due to the breakdown ability and potential caliber swaps. |

Since the QD capability is not desirable to you, the only issue you need to concern yourself with is the lighter barrel. Depending on your application, this may not even be an issue anyway. I was in the same boat and switched my order when they went to the suitcase design... Didn't need it, didn't want it, just more stuff for me to break. My primary concern was sustained accuracy, so I ended up with a OBR, which at 16" isn't really as heavy as I thought it would be.
I think you should be able to work something out, as the tOBR seems to be more desirable right now than the other models, especially if you don't mind a used tAR. What barrel length do you have? |
| The trade off of going to a predatar would be significant. I literally think, well, if my scar is light then great but can it knock off a doorknob at 1000yds? Nope. And that's where I can go to something slightly heavier but significantly more accurate and consistent. Different role different rifle. You could also consider doing more PT if an extra pound or two is going to impact that much. To me it's worth every ounce. Scouts Out! |

My first LaRue Tactical rifle was a 7.62 OBR. The PredatARs were not available when I placed my order. But, they were soon afterward, so I ordered a PredatAR in 5.56. My OBR was amazing. It made me look like a sharpshooter. I used it the next hunting season as a guide gun. Not bad, if you sit in a blind. But, it did become a bit heavy while spot and stalking for whitetails all day.
I finally ordered a PredatAR in 7.62. It suites my needs perfectly......almost. I run it with a suppressor with pretty good result. I wish I had the PST gas block. So, now I am contemplating purchasing the PredatOBR. I believe that it would be a better rifle for me on most occasions. I did sell my OBR, and have regretted it from the minute I committed to the sale. |

| I was tempted to switch my order to a PredatOBR a few weeks ago when they started shipping, but I'm holding out for a PredatAR. I'm not all that interested in the takedown feature or caliber conversions, and I don't plan on running suppressed, so the lightweight (7.75lb) PredatAR is more appealing to me. |

I'm not so sure about the weight thing. My tOBR 16" with scope, light and bipod weighs less than my 700 with just a scope by a fairly large margin. I'd be fine carrying it around all day, would I want to run up-down drills all day? Probably not but carrying it, no issue. Take the light and bipod off and your talking about a very similar weight to most modern battle rifles in 5.56.
Edit: Before I get flamed I'm thinking about an M4, ACOG and PEQ-15 being 10ish pounds being similar to the tOBR being in the 11ish range with glass. |

I hadn't thought of that. Is one available from LT or anyone else? The take down parts on the gun still add a little weight over the PredatAR, probably not a whole lot though. Quoted:

Why not stick a lighter profile barrel in the tOBR? I hadn't thought of that. Is one available from LT or anyone else? 'Fraid LaRue doesn't offer alternative barrels yet, but there are other companies that offer barrel profiles and calibers. |

Not I sir...however I have been looking :) Just seemed to be the easiest and prettiest way to make the rifle lighter. I wonder if LT will (eventually) make different profiles, along with different lengths and calibers, when they start selling separately. Makes sense to me that they would, but who knows whether they will or even how long that will be.... |
