I have a tiny aquaponics system that I've been raising Brown Bullhead Catfish in. In spring 2007 - I got 300 of their 6" channel cats - 200 of their 5" hybrid bluegills - and 10 lbs. of fathead minnows from Dunn's. Pond goes to 12 feet deep - they have thrived ... cats are now 10 - 15 lbs. (younger years are lighter of course). Hybrid bluegills bred in spite of themselves ... minnows doing great. I aerate off the shop compressors every night ... and have always fed AquaChow.

I'm a suburban brat who grew up in CT. We used to go swimming all the time in the lakes and reservoirs that had a variety of fish, including little catfish. They were bottom feeders and all of 6 - 8" long and they used to try and nibble at our toes when we were swimming. Fast forward to when I just graduated high school and travelled to Mississippi. The only place to eat was Katie's Catfish Haven or something like that, so I'm dreading the experience thinking back to the ugly little bastards nipping at my toes. I get in there and there's a catfish steak that's like the width of a 9" plate. I ask the waitress where they catch them darn things (in my Yankee accent) and she just busts out laughing. She was nice enough to explain they actually raise them in farms and the process they use to get them to superhuman size. I was in awe, but still ordered a burger. I'm sure there was a "bless your heart" from the waitress too. .

Any reason in particular you chose Catfish, much less Channel Catfish? I'm glad you aerate. Most pond owners dont and then wonder why their fish either die or are deformed. Dunn's said Channel cats were their hardiest for Texas heat ... just doin' what I was told. |

awesome!
My kids (7/9) hauled in 40-50 between 4 lbs and about 12 (that's a humongous fish for a 9 year old to pull in) a few weekends ago. Youngest got tired and decided to be the net man for the rest of the trip. it was all we could do to keep two lines in the water at the same time... Everybody ate themselves sick that night plus I brought home an ice chest full of fish. A good time was had by all. I didn't catch a single fish myself, just laid back in the boat, worked lines/baited hooks, threw fish in the live well, and laughed my head off. Fishing is one of the most fun things to do with kids (hunting too, but that's another topic). |

We only keep our way of life by teaching the kids. |

The things I love will never be a part of my kids' lives the way they were for me (my kids will never hunt and fish every day throughout their childhoods like I did), but I can give them a taste and hope they love it as much as I do. |

Question:
If a guy was to say, bring a rod and reel and sneak onto a pond behind a green building would he get shot or just ushered off the property?
I'm thinking of visiting my parents in a couple weeks and am just trying to plan my stay. I may not need a hotel if the county has any part in it Just kidding of course...or maybe I'm not |

Might have to look into that once i get a bit more property. The first time I had good catfish was when i was down at the NRA convention. Pappadauxs (i think that was the name of the place) had some good stuff. Pappadeaux...it is good. Their "not cajun" themed restaurant "Pappas" is seafood as well and is a tad better. I live 5 miles from a Pappas...love it! |

I live 5 miles from a Pappas...love it! Didn't make it there. We did hit up the mexican place while we were there. SJU and I put SexGF in charge of picking the restaurants. We also hit some small mexican place near Johnson space center. Best damn mexican food i've ever had. I cant even eat the mexican up here now
