Is this overkill for an 18" OBR meant for long range shooting?

In Magpul's "Art of the Precision Rifle" series, the instructor can't speak highly enough of OBR's and the S&B 5-25 optic with the Horus reticle... Just wondering if the rest of the long range community shares his opinions.

Nope not at all, that's a fine optic...

You should be able to put whatever you want on your rifle.

Optic overkill? NO

Wallet overkill? YES

Who cares what other people thing.  Magnification is personal preference.

As far as the optics capabilities it is more than enough for the cartridge, but I wouldn't say over kill.

What is correct so far as selection of your optic depends not only on what it will go on but also on how it will be used. The OBR is a very precise rifle and the fact that it can be taken apart upper and lower and the scope removed it is quite reasonable that this combination could be carried in a relatively short case which does not look like a long rifle and once in positon the system can be assembled and used with confidence that it will accurately engage hostile targets at long range.  This should probably be issued in this configuration to all Secret Service agents.  So the answer is YES this is a fine choice for specific types of use but it would not be the correct optic for a police tactical entry team working at close range.  So far as private personal ownership its a great choice if you want to polk holes in small groups in paper targets at long range or hunt with it. You really need to realize that the true beauty of the La Rue Mount lies not just in the fact that you can remove the optic and when you put it back on it will hold Zero but that you can do so with multiple optics using the same rifle so you can have one rifle and run a high magnification optic remove that optic install a CompM4s and run that for entry use or hunting hogs at night or remove that and go to an ACOG and once the initial Zero is done it is just a matter of placing the correct optic for the mission onto the rifle.

This

IMO there is no such thing as optic overkill on a long range rig...................................Optic overkill on a long range rig is like saying  D Cups on your size 2 bedroom rig is overkill.....

Don't give them any ideas, they're too  busy as it is.  Just wait till they are caught up on orders to give them ideas for contracts!

I'd want one too but it is too long I think for my 14.5 Tobr/SCobr esp if I want to put a NV in front of it someday...  Right now I'm thinking of the Leupold with the H reticle to leave some room on the upper rail...

I just picked up the 3-20x50H59...thought I was good with the decision but now I am debating sending it back and getting the 5-25.

I have the USO 5X25, which is basically a very similar scope, with the horus reticle.  Overkill?  Not at all at anything 100 yards away or more

How much experience do you have with precision optics in general, as well as with Schmidt PM's?

Would be curious about your thoughts on this optic compared to the 5-25. I have had a few 5-25 Schmidts over the years, and they are probably my favorite optic overall. I was lusting for a 3-20 for a long time. Until they started making it  to the hands of the actual end users (not popular websites/owners/etc. Im sure some know to whom I am referring) and the reviews were not so stellar.

To be fair, I have yet to get my hands on one to shoot, but it seems a general consensus amongst those who can avoid falling into the "it's great because I dropped almost $3k on it" syndrome, that the 3-20 was a net regression from the 5-25. Apparently, amongst a few other items, the turrets were a step backward from the previous PM's.

I can't really give you much help-pretty much a noob.... This was a gift so I can't really comment on the price factor.  I saw the negative reviews and I found plenty of people who recommended it.  I have never been behind a 5-25(handled and looked through one) but I can tell you from handling the turrets on the 3-20 with the MTC could be aggravating but I chose an H59 so I won't be dialing that often. I compared it to a bushnell 3-21 and I thought the glass in the PMII was better.  I chose it over the 5-25 because it was good enough to get out to 1K yds and the FOV was more usable close in as well as a tad smaller and lighter.  I will make sure to give my impression once my mounts show up and I get to the range...I have looked through it at 500, 700, and 1K and even with lovely Phoenix air and warm rush hour air and clarity was really good to me.

If I had the cash for this optic, it would probably be the only optic I would need for long range precision work. Plus with a Larue mount, it would be no thing to take it off and put it on another rifle.

I am using a Schmidt 4-16x42 on my OBR and love it.  The smaller 42mm objective means I dont have to use a cheek riser.

Got a picture from the side?

I always liked the 4-16. But with the 34mm tube and smaller obj, I could never get it close enough to the rail/barrel.
