Hello everybody,

Ok so I want an SPRish rifle for some middle distance and varmint shooting.  Do I want the 18 inch stealth or the 20?  This will have a surefire can if it makes a difference.  On to optics....is the NF 3.5-15 enough or do I need to go up to the 5.5-22 NF?  Reticles?  Is it gonna be too hard to hit varmints with the H58 reticle?  Should I try the NPRF2?    I know it's a lot of questions but I'm debating and I think I need some advice.  Is there anybody who bought the 18 inch stealth and said "damn! I wish I got the 20" or vice versa.  Thanks for the help

Imo 16 = carbine, 18 = spr, 20 = rifle. ymmv.

EDIT: I have a 20" and love it.

To me, the biggest difference between the 18" and 20" Stealth uppers is the gas length.  The 18" is a midlength, and the 20" is a rifle length.  To me that is a bigger difference than the 2" of barrel.  Personally, I really think it's a minimal difference any way you cut it.  I might get the 18" in your case, simply because the brake and can are going to add some additional length, and my personal preference is not to have a 20", plus the additional length.

+1   Agree.  18" Midlength will be perfect with your Surefire Suppressor.  Depending on the Surefire Model - End Mount or Overlap, it will add at least 4" to the barrel length depending on FH or Brake chosen.

Thats exactly why I was leaning towards the 18 inch.  I just see most guys have really long varmint rifles.  I was wondering if the extra two inches was going to help out in the wind or something.  Thanks for the help

You need to shoot various weapons to gain experience. Asking here will get you a ton of different answers, based on the posters experience.

At any rate, having tried them all, I would recommend you get a 16". Especially with 5.56. In my opinion, any range within the effective range of 5.56 the 16" is the best option. Just because it is the most compact and is easier to lug around. The velocity difference is irrelevant unless you just HAVE to have the little extra bit of energy, which you dont, based on the limited info you gave.

Just learn your dope, and practice with lots of rounds, and you are done. I can do everything with a 16" in the effective range on 5.56 that I can with an 18" or 20", so why carry the extra weight and cumbersome barrel?

If the 16" Stealth was a carbine length gas system I would agree - since he is going to be running it suppressed.  But, since the 16" is a mid length gas system, the 18" barrel is a better choice due to the port size and extra/over gassing he will get from the suppressor w/o a switch block ...  18" FTW ...

Doesnt the 16" OBR and PredatOBR have the port selector?

That is the route to go.

Yes, it does, but the Stealth doesn't and the OP is looking for an Upper ...
