Sitting here, eating some tasty venison jerky and drinking a few Leinenkugels, watching Indiana Jones and researching 7.62 OBRs vs PredatARs.

I think Im gonna be ordering one after holiday bills get payed off, so I wanted to get some advice on what would be best for a distance shooter.

From what Ive read, its looking like the OBR is what I should get for accuracy.  I just wanted to see if any resident experts could lend some advice.  Both are fine guns form the reviews, but I want to be sure Im going to order the one that will fit my needs.  Seems the PredatAR is good pretty much just for weight savings over the OBR and the OBR will be the better long range shooter?

If the OBR is the way to go, Im also going to go ahead and assume the 20" barrel will be the best choice for accuracy too?

Thanks in advance for any advice, yall are making me salivate seeing some of these rifles, just have to make a decision and get the funds freed up in the mean time.

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

The 16inch  7.62 OBR is good out to 1000

Why carry the extra weight (20")

Whats the MAX distance you shoot?

I've got a 16" OBR that I can ring a 20" gong @500M all day long. Hits a 10" gong all day long when I'm not behind it.
My PredatAR 556 16" hits that 20" gong @ 500m most of the time - more when the wind ain't dicking with my 55gr ammo.

It really comes down to:
1.) Longer doesnt make it more accurate at short range.
2.) Hunting or doing the sniper challenges - lighter is nicer!

Good luck - as everyone else will tell you - both are excellent rifles.

To answer a couple things:

We can't hunt in PA with semi-autos...yet.  I'm not concerned with this aspect currently.  Maybe if we but our reps enough and get things passed, I'd take this gun hunting...but not too important to me for making this decision of OBR or PredatAR.

I also currently don't really get to shoot much past 500 yards ever, which is why I want a good distance shooter, to get into longer distances.  I have always wanted to get into long distance shooting, just haven't been able to drop any money on a really good shooter until now.  I'd like to be able to take it out to 1000 yards eventually.  Hell, if I can shoot as good as the gun, maybe longer.  Honestly, accuracy is the big consideration for me with this gun.  If I had the money and a good place to shoot (and if my wife wouldnt kille me) I'd just be getting a Barret right now, I just don't have enough saved up to get one.  I've also considered just getting a Rem 700 in .308 and working it over to make it a shooter, but the stuff I read about the LaRue guns seems like they can do just as good, so they really have me interested.

Thanks.

Should have made Range day 2011. Plenty of novice shooters hitting the 1000 yd gong with the 7.62 OBR. Impressive weapon.

This claim seems dubious at best. How large of a gong?

My OBR 7.62 is the most accurate rifle that I have ever laid hands on. It has a 16" barrel. Every time I go to the range I am amazed at how easy it is to shoot tight groups. Having said that, I would rather have the PredatAR in 7.62. As a hunting guide, I carry a rifle with me to the stand, while spot and stalking, or when tracking. My OBR, with the 5.5-22x50 NightForce is tolerable for that purpose. But, the PredatAR is better suited for that job. I have a PredatAR 5.56, and it is very accurate as well as light weight. Currently, I am trying to decide if I should sell my OBR, or keep it. Either way, I am going to get the PredatAR in 7.62. It is the rifle that "fits the bill" for me. You can't go wrong with the OBR for long range shooting. Good luck, and happy shooting!

I would have loved to come to range day, but it would be about a 1,300 mile drive.

Thanks for the info everyone, both sound great still.  Guess I know the answer then, get both!  Wish it were that easy.  Think I'm still leaning slightly towards the OBR, but I've got time to be sure.

If you are looking to get the most accuracy beyond 500, than the OBR is the best choice. Remember, it also has the built in 20moa rail the PredatAr does not. This will ensure you have the elevation in your optic to hit at distance.

I went with 18" figuring it would be the best trade off for weight and velocity. Don't quote me, but I believe the reported difference in muzzle velocity was something like 1-2%...

If memory serves, at or under 2 MOA. Still pretty impressive...

Get the OBR then we can be twins.  I hope to be ordering one some time after the holidays.

I think I am getting a 18" with a Nightforce 3.5x15 scope.

The only reason one wants 20" or longer is: additional 4" or more would provide more velocity and buck the wind a little better.
It comes down to what you want to use it for.

From what you have said I would say 18 inch OBR. It is my personal choice also.

Haha, I was waiting for you to see this thread.  Im pretty sure Im going to go with the OBR, I just had to ask for some advice before I decided.  After playing with your Barrett, Im going to be throwing a Nightforce on it too I think.

I think BigDog is unfamiliar with the definition of "novice".

I know of one female there that has never shot an AR, never shot any rifle past 100 yards, and rarely gets to do that, and she hit it 2 out of 5 at 1000 yards. Of course I told her friend that having Todd call the shots is almost like cheating. I would certainly put her in the novice class though so impressive non the less.
