[ARCHIVED THREAD] - LT-660 question?

I recently bought a LT-660 second hand that's got 2 large holes milled out in the mount (on the sides). I've seen several this way and others where they are solid. I pressume this was done for wieght savings? What's the story on these and what's changed?
