Our snipers have been using the Black Hills Gold 168 gr AMAX load in their Rem 700's for some time now. We just received 3000 rds of that load. We also got a new OBR 18" and issued it to one of the guys (his choice). He initially thought something was wrong with it as he could not get it to group. He then tried some Hornady loaded Match 168 gr AMAX rounds and they grouped fine. We ended up setting him up with a case of the Hornady load for this year and he is happy.

I am just curious as to folks thoughts? It's the same bullet. Different powders/cases make that much difference?

In the photo:
all groups shot by the same person, same day with 5 different rifles at 100 yards; all groups are Hornady on the left/Black Hills on the right; all ammo from same lot
left two targets - new 18" OBR on top; a little older 16" OBR on the bottom (belongs to a County sniper)
right three targets - top: 20" Rem 700; center: 20" Rem 700 suppressed; bottom: 18" Rem 700 (really likes the BH's)

Did anyone else shoot his rifle to confirm the results?  ;)

I have to say that I had the same with Black Hills Ammunition on my OBR. I had better groups with XM80, Hirt, and Radway. The best groups I've gotten from my OBR came from Federal GMM 168 gr SMK and Hornady TAP A-MAX 168 gr.

For some reason, the OBRs that i've seen LOVE Hornady 168 TAP. I've shot a 20 rnd group with 150 Am Eagle FMJ and it did 1.5 inches at 100. Not bad for 20 rnds. I've also shot 168 FGMM and 175 FGMM and both work great.

I'm about to start trying out some 168 Am Eagle. I hear that stuff shoots pretty darn well. As far as BH, I've had bad luck with those in my FNAR and Remmy 700. I can't figure out why. I never tried it in the OBR, after i ran out of it, i said good riddance. They make great ammo, none of my 308s seem to like them.

I've had experienced thicker cases and thinner cases causing two distinct groups during reloading. Although, it wasn't that extreme.

Yes... the groups in the photo were all fired by the County sniper who runs the 16" OBR. Neither he nor my guy could get the Black Hills to group.

if you or soemone you know has reloading tools, try to measure the cartage lenght from the ogive (not tip) and see if there is a difference.  maybe the bullet is set too far forward or back
