I had a friend drive down to South Florida to hang out for a few days and he brought his OBR 5.56 and a few different optics and LaRue mounts. I called the training guys at my P.D. (I'm a LEO) and stopped by the range to see what it would do. The head firearms guy had gone home early and was pissed that he didn't get to handle the LaRue . I sighted in an Aimpoint T1 in the LT- 660 mount and then pulled it off and put on an ACOG in an LT-100 mount. I sighted in the ACOG and then switched back and forth between optics (much to the amazement of the training guys).

My range guys have heard of LaRue thanks to some gun magazines but never had the chance to play with any of their mounts (much less a rifle). They couldn't believe it when I swapped optics and mounts and maintained a zero . The rifle shot an extremely tight pattern and was everything I had hoped it would be. We were shooting 55g Federal bulk pack ammo and did have one live round get stuck in the chamber during the shoot. We knocked it out with a cleaning rod, checked everything out, added some lube, and fired another 120 rounds without an issue.

The only other issue we had was the heat. Without any of the rail sections and index clips added to the rifle (or FUG) the rifle gets hot. It was probably 100 degrees outside in the Florida sun and we were burning through ammo like the department paid for it (they did) . Eventually we were holding the rifle by the PMag to keep from burning our hands. I have a Rock River (Elite Comp) that serves as my current duty rifle and the aluminium half quad free float rail gets every bit as hot when I dump mags through it like we were doing to the LaRue. I guess I could wear gloves but it's effin hot down here. As an afterthough I'm adding a pair of gloves to the admin pouch on plate carrier though.

My friend is going to let me hang on to the rifle, optics, and mounts for a while so my head firearms guy gets a chance to play with it (thanks Charley). He told me he would probably approve the OBR 5.56 for duty use (thanks Glen).

I'd put the round count for the afternoon at between 300-400 rounds.

I'd give the rifle an A+ and I can't wait until I have the funds to replace my RRA with the OBR 5.56.

He still has his OBR 7.62 to shoot. I don't think he will miss the 5.56 for a week. But he is a great friend.

Put another 170 rounds through it today at Markham park and then cleaned it. Wow that BCG is easy to clean.

I'm going to shoot again in the morning at the PD range but my O.C.D. kept me from doing anything else until i had a Shiner Bock and cleaned that thing.

I'm going to hate to give this thing back.

Shiner Bock and Larue.   Sounds like a typical weekend here in Texas.   I'm really wanting to try the OBR and Lite models.  Any pics?
