So I'm looking at getting an Aimpoint since my rifle has been void of optics since I bought it (about 2 years ago).

Obviously there are two choices for rails (plan on buying a combo via LaRue): RAS II and standard.

From what I understand, the RAS II is shorter because of the RAS rail system which sits higher.

Standard is... well... standard.

So if I buy an Aimpoint M2 with the LT-150 (standard) mount, will that give me a co-witness with the stock FSB?

I'd love a railed gas block (with MBUS) but I'm ok with the FSB as is. I just don't want it to be in the way like it is with my crap Bushnell scope on crap short rings.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. To me it's a common sense deal but I just wanted to make sure.

I am pretty sure the standard will be a true co-witness. Oh and u do not want to put a MBUS on the gas block, it will melt it.

Good to know. Won't be putting one on gas block if I get one.

The LT-150 provides a lower 1/3 cowitness.

What does that mean?

The absolute cowitness and lower 1/3 cowitness thing is a question we get a lot around here.  It refers to where the iron sights appear in your optic window.  With an absolute cowitness, if you look through your optic, your iron sights are in the center of your view.  Thus, when you are looking through your glass, you can use either your red dot or your irons.  With a lower 1/3 optic, your optic sits a little higher, and your iron sights sit in the lower view of your glass.  You can look over your irons for a more unobstucted view with your red dot, or look through the lower part of your glass to use your irons.

Common wisdom has it that folding sights are preferred with an absolute cowitness to keep your view clear, and that fixed irons are acceptable with a lower 1/3 cowitness.  YMMV, and there are a multitude of opinions about which is better.  There used to bea  great tacked thread about red dot sights, and had cowitnessing in with it.  You may want to check it out for a better explanation.

I don't know how to do hyperlinks, but there's an explanation of lower 1/3 cowitness tacked to the top of the LaRue Forum.  It's called "Looking for a LaRue Mount with a absolute cowitness for a Micro T1?".  Basic idea behind it is, if you're running an EoTech, Aimpoint, or any other red dot sight, and iron sights (either fixed or flip up in the deployed position) a lower 1/3 cowitness gives you a less cluttered field of view through the optic.  Check out the other thread, it explains it much better than I could without looking at it.

Wow.  Two replies before I can even finish writing my reply.  Guess I'm not the only one not doing a lot of work today.

Thanks for the replies.

It certainly makes sense now.

I believe I'd rather have the lower 1/3 considering I can't fold down my sight.

Thanks again.
