Box 1 of 4 arrived today So far acquired: Giesselle SSA Troy flip ups Bipod/Mount combo XTM panels Also got my shipping notice for H1/LT724 combo Not to mention some swag So stoked for upper and billet lower... |
|
Thx - I think the SBR needs a better upper. It's a 10.5" Noveske barrel in a no name upper, and the rail is ever so slightly askew... I think it needs a LaRue billet upper to maximize my accuracy for the barrel (which is a real sweetheart - I was thwapping steel at 150m today (10" swinger) with that 4 moa dot like nothin')

Please tell us you are not going to run that Wolf ammo through your Stealth My stealth eats wolf like it's candy...as soon as I'm done it's cleaned and if I want accuracy I'll throw it something a little heavier like 69gr. These things are meant to run...and they do it well. They're also meant to be accurate...and they do that well...usually with any ammo you give it. |

You do know that a match grade barrel has a finite life span when it comes to round count right? Running Wolf through a Larue Stealth is akin to buying a Ferrari and putting the cheapest motor oil and gas you can find it. If you own a precision machine please treat it with a little respect.

I doubt very much that Mark would agree with you. It's LaRue TACTICAL, not LaRue Pansy Rifles. |

No, I am saying running junk through a precision machine is a waste of the machine's potential and shows a profound lack of common sense. So what is the expected barrel life for a stealth? I don't mind running a few boxes of wolf thru my rifles for plinking now and then - I don't see the comparison - the copper jacket on wolf will run as well as WWB or BH or any SMK. Sure, it's steel cased, underpowered, and inaccurate - but for shooting soda cans on a saturday - it ain't bad. Wolf won't wear it any quicker than anything else, probably less so to a degree due to lower velocity. I guess I see what you're saying, but just because 77gr. SMK's shoot better than 55gr. federal american eagle, doesn't mean I can't practice with one and use another in the field. |

Mark LaRue himself has said that these barrels have very long life spans. In fact he's stated that if you think the barrel is shot out send it in...they'll check it out themselves and make it right. So you can do whatever the hell you want to with your rifle...I'll keep USING mine. |

some people buy high end sports cars and run 87 octane in them
some people buy econo shit boxes and run 93 octane in them personally, I wouldn't waste my time shooting crappy ammo through a precision rifle that's what my other carbines are for, just like i wouldn't waste my money on 77gr SMK's to break clays at 100yds when I can do it with 55gr XM193... but no one should tell me what i should do with my money and my rifle... if i wanted to to shove a hose in the upper and use my Stealth like a $1200 sprinkler well then fuck you... |

If you seal off the gap between the hose and upper the .223 diameter barrel reduces enough to increase enough pressure for one hell of a water gun...I was thinking of adapting a female hose adapter to the back of my buffer tube and just running straight tap water in there...I know most folks say you need a 5 gallon pressurized pack full of Evian...but I like my TAP water. I'm not going anywhere... I'm not aiming that at anyone in particular. I just hate it when someone tries to tell other people what they should do with their money or guns or cars etc, etc. If it doesn't affect your life in any way, let 'em do it. So what if it MIGHT wear it out faster. At least he's enjoying it and actually using it. Ok, rant over.

Why is it that every time wolf and match barrels are brought up someone has do bring up some damn sports car and gas analogy?!?!?!?! More expensive does not equal better. Do you people even understand what octane ratings are? It has nothing to do with the quality, it just means it is LESS explosive! If I owned a high end sports car I would fill it up with regular. Yes that's right. If I took it to the track, I would fill it up with high octane fuel. Other than that for just driving it around town I would use regular gas. I happen to know a guy, a smart guy, who owns and drives a Porsche 911. He used to race 911s and RX7 and a bunch of other cars. He also used to own a business where he worked on 911s. Oh, and he built more than a few of them, including all of his race cars, and the 911 he drives around now from the ground up... Guess what he putts in the tank for driving it around? That's right, regular!
I'm sorry for ranting off topic, but I am SO sick of this stupid analogy! Without fail it comes up in every topic it like this. It makes me want to crush something cute and fuzzy... Now back on topic of various bullets. I actually was interested in the whole wolf in a match barrel thing a while back. Yes, I got the damn sports car analogy turd thrown in my hamper quite a few times. But sifting through people that didn't feel like contributing anything actually useful and would just re post their own version of my favorite analogy. I actually have a very interesting conversation with the guy over at Superior barrels. He was saying that the reason Wolf was bad was because of the way the bullets were made and what they were made out of. Basically they are made with a lead core, like most other bullets, but instead of a copper jacket, they have a copper plated steel jacket. The bore gets hit by every bullet through it, and if that bullet happens to be steel one would assume that steel on steel rubbage would be bad... Or is it? This got me curious so I took a piece of aluminum, and drilled three .22 holes in it. I then epoxied three different bullets into it, one in each hole. A Military M855 bullet, a 55gr. FMJBT, and a Wolf bullet. I threw the block in the mill and cut away half of it so the bullets were nicely sectioned. After a quick polish I had myself a nice example of the gutts of each bullet. Two things that struck me about the Wolf bullet. The first was just how thin the copper plating was but then again, what did I expect from plating? The second, and more important, discovery was how soft the steel jacket was. It seemed just about as soft as the copper jacket on the other two bullets. Maybe a little harder, but defiantly not as hard as a barrel. So I came to my conclusion, not from that damn car analogy, but from my own testing. "What is that conclusion?" you may be asking yourselves. Simply put, I don't think Wolf is exponentially worse for your barrel like most claim. It may wear your barrel slightly faster than a standard copper jacket, but people make it sound like you might as well be running a file through your bore, and that is just wrong. It all comes down to what you have. I have a nice 18" SPR with a nice match barrel on it. I Would not run Wolf through this. But that is just because I have other rifles that I can use the plinking ammo in... For plinking! Imagine that Now, if all you have is your new stealth and your firing schedule/budget ratio dictates the purchase of Wolf ammo, I wouldn't worry too much about it. The money you save on a few cases of Wolf could just buy you a new barrel anyway.

Do you people even understand what octane ratings are?! once again reading is fundamental... you took something i said completely out of context... my analogy was that people are using the wrong grade of gas which leads to poor performance or stock performance at a higher cost... most sports car have their timing modified so they require 91+ octane to prevent combustion under compression... if you run 87 in an engine designed like this, it starts to ping and run like shit. trust me i've done it before. just like if you run wolf through a match grade barrel, sure it will shoot, it will just not perform as intended... on the flipside, if you feed your olympic plinker plus a bunch of 77gr SMK it isn't magically going to become a precision rifle like your honda civic with premium isn't magically going to outrun a ferrari... |
