I have two LT Stealth upper receivers mounted on SMOS (now Larue) lowers, so I know LT likes'em tight. But I'd like to know what method ya'll are using to take down your OBRs. Call me a P, but I'm having trouble getting the upper to separate from the lower after removing the take down pin. I'm sure I could force it (taking a LOT of effort) but I'd like advice on a better method. Where do you grip the barrel or the butt stock? How do you use leverage to separate the upper from the lower? No slams here! The rifle is solid as a rock and I love it! But I would like to pull the BCG out and have a look at its beautiouness.    Any suggestions?

For clarity, this is the best AR type I have ever owned. I simply love it. It is now my 'Go To' rifle (pending full testing). I just need advice on taking it down in the most efficient manor.

Kerry

PS Yes, I'm a little gun shy after my last post.

I remember you!!!  JK...

Good question...you are dealing with a precision machined rifle, and I don't blame you for asking!!! I cannot answer your question YET!!!

Haha! TAMU jeep. I'm an Aggie (82 FTD), too, but "Cold dead hands" and all that...

Oh wait, can you really get it apart?

'Cause it's hard. Seriously...

I was laughing today telling my FFL to quit being a P, and open that sucker up. We ended up with both of us holding onto an end to break mine open. He kept saying "Are you sure there's nothing but the takedown pin holding it closed?", and I kept giggling, saying " Yes! I'm sure, isn't that awesome?!". We finally got her broke open, took a quick look at the internals and slapped her shut. Now if I can just get some trigger time, because I couldn't today, it started pouring right after UPS dropped it off.

You still in town?  according to LEOShorty it's a two man job...of course I'd have to shoot it too...

ETA:

While I am an Aggie I'm struggling with the 82 FTD thing...

No, I'm exiled in Austin! There's burnt orange everywhere I look.

But thanks anyway.

Ahhhhh FDT NOT  FTD.  Awesome, I've always enjoyed the fish drill team.  You guys were pretty damned talented back in the day...of course if you beat a monkey with and axe handle he can do those tricks too....I KEED I KEED....sorry to hear about the Austin thing...good luck.

I managed to scrape up a box or two...

And I would have shot it in the rain but I had a meeting that I could not miss.

Ha! Yes, FDT. Sorry. I'd hate to think you thought I studied floral arrangements.

The dirty secret is... I really like Austin –– in spite of all the tea sips and the commie city council.

BTW, I'm still open to suggestions on more take down methods from any additional OBR experts out there.

I actually found it easier to just pop both pins and and pull the upper off. It was a lot easier than just trying to crack it open from the back.

I just lay the handguard across my leg with the mag well butted up against the inside of my thigh, and push down on the handguard and the butt, gradually increasing pressure 'til she pops open. Funny, anyone watching when I start mashin' on it tells me to let the bolt forward.

On a side note, does anyone else like to take a whiff of that burnt oil smell as soon as they open up an AR?

You're doin' it the hard way. Try this....grab the top of the upper with your left hand and use your right hand to slap down on the stock. It'll open easily. I had the same issue w mine.
Tight? You wouldn't want it any other way.

back in the day..(don't ya just hate it when people start a story that way?) I learned a way that precision rifle shooter dismantled their AR rifles.  They did all kinds of tricks to tighten them, including a psuedo bedding.  If one of those guys had seen you pop the rear pin and then attempt to lean the upper forward on the front pin, they would have sliced you gizzard.  Similar to the way M-14/M1A1 shooters are about you grabbing their rifle by the handguard/heat shield - you just don't do it.

Anyways, I was taught by the USAMU to pull BOTH pins and seperate the halves by pulling them straight up, away form each other evenly, and off.

On a personal note, my OBR was very tight and smooth, but not as friction bound as you guys are describing.  It is still one of the tighteset from-the-factory lockups I have seen; but I don't need 2 folks to break apart.  The bitch is smooth as glass at EVERY moving part.  UNBELIEVABLE!  I have another one on order, but if the OBR LITE is as smooth - LT will have created the holy grail for a gas impingment rifle.
