What is the effect of cold weather shooting on the Stealth stainless steel barrel? I have read that cold weather shooting is rather hard on stainless steel barrels and can in some instances actually destroy the barrel.
What is the life expectancy of the Stealth barrels & does doing the occasional mag dump accelerate barrel wear very much? Now I know shooting .22's through the stealth upper is not the smartest thing in the world, but with today's price and availability of ammo what effect would shooting .22's have on wear of the barre/barrel throatl & accuracy issues with a CMMG .22 adapter. |

I have shot stainless steel barrels for years and have never noticed any problems shooting them in cold weather. I'm in Maryland and shoot all year round, even in the coldest weather. I have never heard or read about shooting a barrel in extreme cold causing a problem either - sounds like one of those internet rumors (e.g. I knew a guy who had a friend who knew a guy at a gun store that saw a gun come in that the owner said he shot on a cold day......)
A barrel's life expectancy is somewhere around 10 seconds. Think about it - if you shot 10-15K rounds through the barrel, considering the length of the barrel and the speed of the bullet, how much time do all those bullets actually spend in the barrel? Not much! I can't imagine that soft lead .22 (rimfire) bullets would put any wear on the barrel or throat, just be sure to clean it well afterwards. The cleaning will probably put more wear on the barrel that the bullets. |

Thank you, have read on the internet about how bad it is to shoot stainless when it's really cold out and the problems it can cause. Figure if there was a problem it would have show up with as many stainless barrels are being deployed to support the war on terror. |
