Just received and installed the AA battery adapter cap to my DBAL-D2.  Unit will not function.  Works fine with the 123 batteries/cap.  What could be the problem ?

The voltage between the AA and the CR123 is different, and it wont allow the unit to function by simply changing the cap. We sell AA caps for broken existing AA caps.
