I have posted a few questions recently here about the PVS 14 I just received.
I subsequently talked with you guys on the phone and appreciate the info and knowledge. I have another issue however. When I dial the power setting all the way over to activate the IR illumination that the PVS 14 generates on its own......I see a red, rectangular square in the lower left corner of my vision field. I didnt realize this was not supposed to be there until I looked through the 2nd PVS 14 that I bought in the same order and saw that that one did not have the visible light. So....mine rings loudly and has a red light in the glass....whereas the one I handed to my business partner is silent and has clear vision (no red light).. Any trouble shooting you guys can suggest.. If there is not.....I would like to talk to someone about swapping it out.. Thank you! |

The auto-gating is what is causing the whining. As explained before, it has a direct correlation to the amount of light that you are operating it in. The more that there is available, the more pronounced the whine. If you are testing it in the daylight (even with the cover on) it will produce more noise than when you use it in very dark conditions. Testing it in any conditions other than dark, is not giving you a fair evaluation of the performance characteristics, since you are operating it outside of its intended spectrum. Like we talked about, you can test this by turning it on in a lit environment and covering and uncovering the front lens. The pitch/ tone/ volume will change (lessen) as the system has less light to use. You will see the same effect when you use a bright, IR illuminator at night. Also, every system is different so, yours will not sound like your Partners.
The LED light is an integral part of the system. It comes on when you have the illuminator on so that you have a visual indicator that you have gone from a passive to an active system. There is also another LED light, in the same part of your field of view, that lets you know when your battery is getting low. That one, will blink. Depending on your individual system, sometimes these are harder to see. To test: turn your switch to allow your illuminator to come on then, rotate your monocular through a 360, while you look through it and, at the periphery of your viewable area. If you do not have your eye fully pressed into it, you may not see it. It is designed to be seen when the goggle is fitted properly but, not be obtrusive/ distracting in your field of view. If you go through the above procedures, I feel certain you will find it. If you can't, contact us directly (via [email protected]) and, we will try and help. Ok....Thanks for the quick responses....
Not trying to "whine" myself... Just all new to me....and am sitting here looking at two identical units that look the same and have the same construction specifications....but have different operational characteristics.. I follow specifications for a living....so the variation in characteristics are odd by my perception...but thats just me.. Besides.....I wonder how many others here bought NV for pig hunting and "just in case" scenarios.....but in daily application actually use it to check on your 4 month old son as he sleeps in his crib at night...(thus...my concern about the PVS noise) |
