Is the handguard tube part of the system for the GII identical to the AR15 versions?  Is just the barrel nut the proprietary part?  I would like to use a 9" handguard rather than a 12 in on a DPMS G2 w/o cutting and loosing the front sling swivel sockets..

The hand guards are different, the GII 308 hand guards and the AR15 hand guards are not interchangable.
