Could I have done damage to either the rifle or the rail TRYING to remove the gas tube? This system came on my rifle and I was not aware how it was installed. I just figured the gas tube was stiff and gave a good effort to yanking the gas tube off.

Well, the gas tubes are pretty stiff to remove on all my rifles. I stopped when I realized this was tougher than normal. I just wouldn't have though the rail system would need to be removed to take off the gas tube. Thats a pretty routine function for me when cleaning my rifles.

I'm sure thats what makes it stable just wish I would have come here first.

HOW were you doing this?  With the rail system still on you wouldn't have access to the lever to remove the tube, would you?  I can't recall without looking at it.  Did you also have the piston still installed when trying to remove the gas tube?  This is a pretty common oversight, and has created a lot of "stuck tubes".

The rail system doesnt cover the lever. The piston was removed.

The upper rail system screws into a mount thats screwed into the lower rail system. (I think, I haven't taken then lower system apart yet.)

All you need to remove is the four screws that hold on the top cover . then you can take off the gas tube
thanks

This is the answer you seek. Quit trying to tear things off the rifle.
