I bought a couple of 25 rd mags over the weekend and they had a description of "Brand New • CMMG Factory Mag • Full Body Mag • Black Polymer • Impact Resistant • Bolt Hold Open • Green Follower". I haven't had a chance to try out my upper yet but just installing the BHOA and inserting the magazine, it doesn't seem the follower goes back far enough to catch the latch on the BHOA.

This is the magazine

So it looks like the follower will hold the bolt open but not really compatible with the BHOA since it will not activate the latch to keep the bolt open when the magazine is removed. Is that correct?

You are 100% correct. Those are followers from the past. They will not
operate the BHOA. They'll only hold the bolt until the mag is removed.

Ah, you got caught by the "bolt hold open" line didn't you. That's understandable,
marketing is filled with those who word their descriptions very carefully to get you
to buy products you normally wouldn't. While technically correct in that they have
"last round hold open," they are not the Generation II. I doubt too many would be
buyers knowing something better exists.

So you don't get fooled again, look for these words: "CMMG .22 Evolution Generation II,"
and "CMMG BHOA Gen II Compaitible." If you see these words it pretty much reduces
your chances of getting burned.

I knew they were the older gen but I did think that bolt hold open follower meant it was compatible with the BHOA. Oh well, they were cheap (~12 shipped new) so I'm still happy with them. I'll pick up some new mags that are BHOA compatible and have steel lips in the near future but these will work well for burning through the ammo on the duelling tree. Never can have enough mags.

It's the same with uppers. Only if you buy from CMMG do you know what you are getting.
Market is tough right now.

Yeah, the upper I just bought was a little confusing. It was supposed to be the standard upper with just a phosphate bolt but when it came in, the bolt is bare metal. So it's either stainless or they forgot the phosphate coating. It is magnetic but that doesn't completely rule out stainless. The bolt has the patent pending marked on it so it seems in the finished condition. However the collar is phosphate. Are your stainless bolts magnetic?

Either way, took it out tonight and shot about a 100rds through it with no issues.

That is a stainless bolt. Standard collar is phosphate. You have to order a stainless collar as an up grade.
You got a $30 up grade for free.
