I just received my conversion kit the other day and put 5 mags through it (10 rounds as I am in a Ban state), and on the last magazine, the recoil guide rod/spring got stuck in the spring housing area. I had to take a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it back out. I did NOT lube anything on the unit prior to firing it. What would have caused the guide rod spring to get stuck? Once I pulled it out, I did oil the spring a bit to loosen it up, popped it back into the upper and cycled the bolt via the CH. It seemed to function fine but I have not been back to the range to check live fire. Has anyone else seen this issue before?
I have had this happen, but mine was WELL USED. The shoulder on the guide was rough and the spring would bind on it and jam up inside the bolt. Take a very close look where that spring and guide rod go into the guide on the bolt when the bolt is fully rearward. If anything is rough in there, they can hang up. There is a shoulder on the back of the guide where it fits in the rails. It holds the rod in place and keeps the spring from riding up over the rod. IF that shoulder is not nice and square, the spring can ride up on it and jam inside the bolt when the bolt is fully to the rear. This sounds like what happened to yours. Check that rod very closely and if the shoulder is damaged, you need a new rod and spring. Replace them together as after it jams the spring can get bent making it easier for it to jam up again. I just filled out the form at the CMMG website and got a new rod and spring under warranty, all was good after that.
Fixed it. It was the guide rod spring. The spring, the back side toward the rear of the carrier, has an oversized coil that kept jamming the bolt during cycling. I had to punch out the roll pin, take out the spring and cut off the bad coil. I then flipped the spring around, moved the back to the front, and put it all back together. Its working perfectly now!!
