Hey Steve and Co.,
I have an Armalite AR-10T carbine with a 16" heavy SS match barrel. I have been considering having it contoured (under the handguards) and/or fluted (in front of gas block or perhaps the full length of the barrel) to shave some more weight off of what ends up being a 10lb+ "carbine" with optics, mag, etc. The barrel is 416R stainless, with a diameter of approx. 1" under the handguards, 0.875" at the gas block, and approx. 0.750" from just in front of the gas block to the muzzle. I was wondering if you have performed this service on a 10T carbine barrel before and what you may have done in terms of contouring/fluting? Also, do you have any estimate of how much weight I might save by contouring/fluting this barrel? Thanks for your help! |

Thanks for the input, Steve. I appreciate your honest opinions.
For only an 8oz weight savings (give or take), I think I'll just leave this one well enough alone. Between the barrel mods and some other work I was planning, I was hoping to get around 2-2.5lbs in weight savings, but that won't fly with only 8oz coming off the bbl. Thanks again! |
