One of my buddies said the Army sent out an official letter banning the use of all Magpul magazines. Is this true? Complete BS if it is. There's no doubt in my mind the PMAG is worlds better than USGI mags.

Have not seen anything, but, alas, I am a Guardsman, it may take a bit to filter down.

Also, it could be a specific level command banned them..i.e Battalion, regiment, or Brigade commander may have laid down the rule, possible it is not Army wide....

Army says no to polymer mags.

From the chatter I've heard it's primarily because there was no control over which polymer mags guys were buying, and as there are several manufacturers producing magazines of varying quality, it's safer to ban them across the board.

When I was in Afghanistan in 2011 my company received 800 30rd Windowed Black P-mags through the U.S. Army Supply System.

Here's hoping those and the other units supplied by the Army would be grandfathered in.

If I remember correctly I have a PMAG around here with an NSN on it.  If I can find it I'll run it through ESS (AF supply computer) and see if it works.

The bulletin is a restatement of the same policy TACOM has had since the PMag was released 5 years ago.

The only "approved" magazine for the M4 is the USGI. Green or Tan follower magazine.

Remember "tan-is the plan, green-start to lean, black-take it back."

2. Issue: TACOM has become aware of units ordering 30 rd. commercial (i.e.
polymer, etc.) magazines for their M4/M16 family of weapons. The M4/M16 Army
authorized magazines are the following: NSN 1005-00-561-7200 (improved
magazine) and NSN 1005-00-921-5004 (older magazine; use until exhaustion).

3. User Actions: TM 9-1005-319-10, the Additional Authorized List (AAL),
states that NSN 1005-00-921-5004 is authorized, as well as NSN
1005-00-561-7200. Units may use the older magazine NSN 1005-00-921-5004
with the green follower until exhausted. The improved magazine is available
in stock, NSN 1005-00-561-7200, and has a tan follower. The improved
magazine features an improved follower and follower spring. These new
features help to reduce the risk of magazine-related stoppages. Units are only authorized to use the Army authorized magazines listed in the technical manuals. Remember; "tan-is the plan, green-start to lean, black-take it
back." Magazines with the black follower are the oldest and should be turned
in to your unit supply sergeant or local supply point.

4. Unit Commanders, contact your local TACOM LCMC Logistics Assistance
Representative (LAR) or your State Surface Maintenance Manager upon receipt
of this message for assistance. For assistance in locating your TACOM LCMC

It is a Marine Corps NSN, similar to the Blue Force Gear 2 point sling.

However an NSN doesn't qualify or approve an item for usage.
