Or can I attach it to the base plate my current 1pt sling is attached to?

I use an MS2 with a regular single point end plate. An ASAP isn't necessary, but does make transitioning from one shoulder to the other far easier.

I passed on the ASAP plate, ordered the MS2. Reason I wanted the MS2 is cause the 1pt sling that came with the last AR I got, the release buckle digs into my collar bone. Not cool.

I don't think the ASAP plate is good in consideration of noise discipline. I've spoken with others concerning this and they agree. If it were covered with, say, the rubber that lineman's plier grips are dipped in, then I'd go for it.

Room for improvement.

Then the ring would not slide freely, and there would be no value to the ASAP.  The noise issue you speak of is just not an issue.  Pretty much all metal attachment options are going to allow a small amount of noise or rattling, unless you are using paracord or some other non-metalic method to join the sling to the rifle, I don't see how you avoid this, but again, it just isn't an issue.  Unless you are a ninja... and by that I mean a real ninja with black pajamas and those funny ninja toe shoes, then maybe it would be too much noise.  Of course, firing a rifle would probably be a little noisy, too.

It obviously is an issue if you're trying to be quiet.  God forbid you try to be quiet while trying to get into position to make noise.

Have you actually used one?  Just curious.  It isn't loud, and you can avoid all clinks and rattles by taking the slack out of the sling.

I've used the Magpul sling on with the ASAP plate, and with a single-point QD plate with just a QD loop.

If you look at the picture below, you'll see the sling is clipped to the top AR, using  a QD loop.  I basically never remove the loop, just unclip the sling from it.  With no sling attached, it is nice and quiet.  With the sling attached, I've noticed no difference in transitioning from one shoulder to another.

The AR pistol below is a recent build.  I put an ASAP plate on it, and immediately noticed how noisy it is.  Yes, with sling attached and tension on the sling, it's quiet.  But with no sling, or no tension, it's quite noisy.  Not an issue for me (I'm not some stealth operator), but I can EASILY see where someone would balk at having this on their rifle due to noise concerns.

The "stealth operator" is pretty well practiced in reducing noise. No matter what sling mount you have, stealth demands that your sling be tight at all times. There are no "moving parts." Any sling will make noise if you let it. If one practices enough, he will find that even transitions can be done silently with the ASAP. And if your urban ninjitsu fails you, there's always electrical tape. Seriously. Wrap the bar in electrical tape. Improvise, adapt, overcome.

Covered in rubber?  There's stuff for that:

I'm familiar with their Liquid Tape product for electrical.  I'm sure that would do the trick.  As for not allowing it to move freely, I think the weight of the rifle would overcome the rubber.

Do you use one, and are you versed in friction/traction?

The weight might overcome the rubber, but you are essentially putting tires on you ASAP.  That means it will catch, causing a stutter as the ring tries to move from side to side.

As it is shipped, it glides as smoothly as a blade on ice.

Noticed how the gentleman above said that "with sling attached it is nice and quiet?" If you aren't running a sling, then the ASAP serves no purpose- tape the ring to the bar and you're set.

+1 to this^^^! I have the same set up on my rifle and my AR pistol and the QD setup is a lot quieter. I don't have any problem with transitions with either.

It's a Daniel Defense one.  This one here
