Just watched The Art of the Dynamic Handgun trailer and noticed yall left out  "Cant"

"amateurs train until they get it right... professionals train until they CANT get it wrong"?

Maybe my laptop skips or something....

and my art of the tactical carbine should arrive today

Yea, that always confused me, they really did leave out "can't". He still gets the point across though

The concept is to push your speed and skill set to the limit, until you fail (go too fast, hit your limits, etc).  That concept is training until you get it wrong.  They did not leave out a word!

It is pushing your training to the limit and finding your limits.  The harder you train and push, the further your skills develop.  If you are not pushing the limits... you are not training hard enough!!

I think the phrase is deliberate. It means knowing where your weaknesses and failure points are. Better to find them in a practice setting where you can address them than in the real world where failure has irreparable consequences.

Nah, they use a predator drone for these things, you might want to get to a fortified position pretty soon.

You are right.  That is the way i always heard it at least.  Maybe they meant it different.

ETA:  Looks like they meant what they said.  Actually makes perfect sense when you look at it like that.

Even a super über pro can get it wrong.  Maybe they meant something similar to how they push you past your comfort zone, to the point that you DO get it wrong, pro or not...

Dunno.

We purposely changed the training adage, To understand/train to your failure points is to train till you get it wrong.  To say that you "can’t get it wrong" is an absolute statement and if you understand the Dynamics theory of non-absoluteness then it makes perfect sense.  A true professional in a training environment will train till he fails in order to recognize the point in which he can grab for the next rung other ladder of excellence.

Bottom line is if you are training until "you can’t get it wrong" then you have hit the top of the ladder of excellence.... and then you are not excelling anymore....becasue your in a place we call FANTACY LAND....because it doesnt exist.

Personally, I don't think you should ever stop training.  Gunfighting is a perishable skill, which must be refreshed continually.

I do like the Magpul adgage though, we should constantly strive for the next level of excellence.

I always thought the point of the old adage was it is impossible even for professionals to train until they can't get it wrong, so they are always training...

anywhoo,

I'm in the middle of disk 1 (AOTTC) and I'm gonna have to watch this thing sooooo many times to get any of the info down.... its taught very well... but its just soooo much info for such a "weekend warrior" as myself.  I can't imagine how much practice it has taken to get as efficient as yall (Travis and Chris) and I feel as if though Chris keeps yelling at me through my headphones

Professionals train until they CANT get it wrong . . . .

I always thought I missed something in the video's because everyone was misquoting you guys , I always related that saying to martial arts, working out, etc.  If you're not training to failure you're probably not training hard enough!

For quotes I love some of Soke's...

What he said....  If your not failing 1. Your not being truthful with yourself. or 2. Your not pushing yourself.  I think that is one of the concepts they talk a lot about in the Magpul Dynamics courses.

Well put Travis. In the first handgun class I took I shot fist-sized groups for the first exercise. Told me I wasn't pushing myself if I had time to shoot groups like that.

I don't wanna hound Travis but, I have to wonder if maybe the guys who run the Magpul site are jerking Travis' chain.  I was just out at the main page and sometimes I get sucked in to watching the little quotes go by on that little flash window, I swear I just saw this:

"Amateurs train until they get it right...

Professionals train until they can't get it wrong."

The original quote was meant to be applied to a specific task.  So you practice a task til you can't get it wrong, then you move on until you find the next task that you fuck up, and so on.

I got that, I just thought it was funny that Travis was so adamant about his version of the saying and intoning that the "train until they can't get it wrong" part was a wrongheaded attitude and then it showed up on the front page of his company's website.  Like I said, I just have to wonder if someone over there is pulling his chain.

For my part I agree with Travis' version, it just made me laugh.

The website quote was from the original saying that has been around for awhile and the one Travis and Chris changed.

It is something like this...

Amateurs train until they get it right...

Experts train until they cannot get it wrong.

Professionals train until they get it wrong.

I see where Travis is coming from and totally agree with his analogy of the quote and why they have modified its words slightly. It fits into their training mantra quite well. I still prefer the original and have quoted it for several years now. In my opinion.....if you train until you cannot get it wrong. That tells that one has reached their failure point many times and had to step it up a notch to accomplish their ultimate goal of NOT getting it wrong....or as Travis says....."climb that next rung on the ladder of excellence".

Its a good quote either way and one I preach as well.
