I was looking at the Del-ton site, thinking about a 7.62x39 conversion and noticed the following note. Anyone happen to know for sure why this is? Is it trigger/hammer spring pressure, firing pin length, hammer weight? Does anyone have one of these and what ammo have you had success with?
"Note: Due to this item being a conversion part for the AR platform, we recommend using commercial-grade ammunition. You will experience light primer strikes with military grade ammo, i.e. WOLF, Brown Bear." thanks, timmer50 |
| I think it has something to do with the ammo having Berdan primers. Basically a military type primer. They require a harder or deeper strike to set them off (for obvious reasons) . I have read about shaving a small amount off the bolt face or the firing pin stop to acquire a deeper strike. If you Google it or search AR-15's forums you will find info about this issue. It pertains to all 7.62 conversions that I have found. BTW I have one of these on order from DEL-TON since 1/15/11. I just called today and was told the barrels are on backorder event though their website states that they are in stock. I was told 2-3 weeks more. From reading this forum, it is the same thing as everybody was told about their 5.56 barrels. The one thing I know about steel cases is that the do not expand like brass when fired. That may be one reason most manufactures do not recommend Russian ammo i.e. Wolf, Brown Bear, etc. I have fired more than 1000 rounds of Bear ammo. Other than extra carbon build-up I haven't noticed any extra wear due to this ammo. Still, shoot what you are most comfortable with. |
| I haven't had problems with that ammo, the major problem I have is that I can't get through a whole mag without atleast 2 FTF. They (Del-Ton) added M4 feedramps for me, but it still just doesn't function 100%. I'm parting it out on gunbroker now. It seems like a mag issue, and maybe partially but these mags (c-mags) work in other 7.62X39 guns. Chad at C-products has sent me a total of 12 replacement mags for my orriginal 5, still no go. I'm not sure where the problem is, I just don't want to deal with it anymore. I haven't heard of anyone else with this issue on Del-Ton uppers, so I wouldn't hold it against them, but this set up doesn't work for me. |
| I have the DelTon 7.62x39 upper and have had no problems with it or my CProducts mags. I feed it Wolf as well as surplus Yugo brass cased ammo. I have had no FTF or FTE issues at all. It is as reliable as my Saiga so far under the conditions that I use them both. |
