So the wife came back from some damn wives "coffee party" raving that we have to go get a Power of Attorney for her. Now I know it is a good idea if getting deployed but I am not going anywhere anytime soon (im in training). My question is, is it necessary for me to get it now? How many of you have one and are not deployed? I told her its not necessary unless I am getting deployed but to be honest I dont know shit about it, just that it gives her the power to do shit in my name, which even though I trust her kind of scares me. So is it necessary?

Now before yall tell me she is gonna take my money and run, this isnt the local hooker from the Shanty Shack. I have been dating her for 7 years and married for 1. I trust her...yeah I know, thats what the all say.

i only give mine one when i'm not around. she had one while i was on deployment and right now i'm in training but about 12 hours from home so she has one now. other than that, there's no reason for her to have one. MAYBE a springing power of attorney, but that's about the only one i can think of that would be ok to have for no particular reason.

You can have a limited POA and list specific things she is allowed to do in your name.  They can also be useful when you are not deployed in case you become incapacitated, etc...

I look at it this way; you either trust her or you don't.  If you don't trust your wife, you have bigger problems than a POA.  My wife has full POA, but I still monitored the banking over the internet so I could remind her when she was spending too much.

I am gonna go with my "HELL NO" standard reply.  I am sure you will ignore me, the young ones always do.  On the upside a PoA will allow her to ruin you extremely quickly; maybe even quickly enough that you will only feel your heart and soul being ripped out for a few seconds, like pulling off a band-aid very quickly instead of the lengthy months of pain most of us go through.

That seems to be a common problem when we deploy. Everyone's wife spends more money while we're gone. Just cause I am making more money, doesn't mean it should be spent! SAVE it.

Ask why she'd need your POA. If there is good reason, in your opinion, then perhaps a limited POA (done by JAG) would be in your interest. But I would not do a full POA unless deployed. Giving the wife full POA while deployed can be a good thing... or a bad thing. Situation dependant. You know your wife better than anyone.

See the JAG and get a specific power of attorney for purpose. One for the bank, one for the car, etc...

Some banks will not honor a general POA.

The JAG will have it set up so he can do 7 specific ones as easily as one general, plus it's free.

My wife is a paralegal so she drafted ours anyway.  Yeah, the emotional spending is a pain.  My wife filled the nu hubby time with shopping so she would not be alone at home.  Over a 2 year period, I think she spent about $50K.  It didn't cause any financial strain or anything but I would rather have the extra $ than not.

Judge Advocate here  . . .

Generally don't recommend one when someone is not deployed.  We had one when I was deployed and it was necessary for somethings we wanted to do, but honestly with the ability to email documents back and forth not critical.  Depends on your job of course but if you are on a big FOB with regular access to email - I am not sure they are critical.

They can of course be used to screw things up, but when I have seen that happen it is usually one of many things.

Consult Legal Assistance at your local OSJA.

Another judge advocate chiming in; listen to what you're being told.

A limited POA at most, a trip the law center for sure. Understand EXACTLY what you're asking for and what she will be able to do if she gets it.

Like another has said, not 100% sure she needs one unless you're deploying.

Thanks for all the help.

We are gonna take a trip to the JAG and see what they have to say about it next week. I think at this party the other wives told her she has to have one so she got it in her head that we need it. Dont think she understands that it isnt 100% necessary, especially since I am in a course that if anything was to happen while I was in the field they wouldnt have a problem letting me take care of it.

Thanks again
