Darn good deal guys. Of all the guys I served with, I am the ONLY one who used every last penny of their GI bill. Don't let your benefits slip away.

that is AMAZING.  Much better than the system already in place.  I will certainly be taking full advantage of these benefits come 2012

This is still in the "bill" stage and has not yet been passed into law, correct?

Correct.  I wouldn't start counting any chickens just yet.  The billions of extra dollars it will cost have to come from somewhere.

ETA:  One thing I found interesting is if you opt for the new GI bill tuition will be paid directly to your school, so no going to a cheapo school (or having the state, guard, or employer) pay your tuition and scamming the MGIB money.  My brother is currently doing that, his school VA rep swore to him it's ok to get his MGIB money and do what he wants with it since his company pays 100% TA.

I'll be sticking with the current bill, since I will likely use it for post-grad work and can use the entire amount in 2 years or so under the old system.  I don't have any dependents to give it away to anyway.

Yep, it's practically SOP to use State Tuition Reimbursement or Purple Heart Tuition waivers and pocket the MGIB money for living expenses when members of the Guard attend college.

Seeing as how I was planning to use my MGIB benefits immediately after I retire, I'm quite happy with the apparent extra $$ available under the new plan.

That being said, I have a question that mucho interweb surfing has yet to answer:

I very recently paid the $600 "plus up", did I waste my money?  No mention anywhere of what the interim rate will be for those of us who paid the extra $$$.

The interim benefit is reported as $1321.  That is only $71 more than it was for FY08.

You don't have to convert to the new plan, and in some cases it would be foolish to do so.  I don't plan on it, since the tuition cap will screw me for post-grad work.  For people who have used part of their MGIB benefit you can convert the remainder on a month-for-month basis, from what I have read.  At any rate the VA said realistically it will take then two years to get the new program up and running anyway.

We watched the Presidents speech and then Around The Services  on the Pentagon channel at work today. The new bill is supposed to take effect on 1 Aug 2009.

I'm one of those guys that never signed up for VEAP (we were told you could sign up at any time)
In 1986 or 1987, During the changeover from VEAP to Montgomery (we were told you could sign up at any time)....

yeah.. that really worked out.

I called the VA last week. (I retired in 2005) Looks like I will be eligible for the new
9/11 GI Bill. Nice.

I'm interested in the ability to transfer my GI Bill to my daughter and I can't get anybody to give me the answers I need.  Here's my story:

I was Active duty Air Force from Feb 1991-August 1999 and never used my MGIB.
Joined The Air Guard in August 2001 and have been activated for about 18 months.

My 10 year eligibility period is scheduled to end August of 2009 but with my 18 months of activation that extends it out to about Feb of 2011.  I'll keep getting more activation time so the deadline to use the MGIB will keep getting extended out further.

I have no need to use my MGIB with the career I have and want our 8 y/o daughter to be able to use it when she gets of college age but am confused as hell because I keep getting contradicting information.  Some have said that I need to wait until August of 2009 until everything is finalized before they can tell me what I'll be able to do in transferring my MGIB to our daughter.  In the meantime I understand that I am eligible for the new Post 9/11 GI Bill, as well as some kind of Guard school assistance, but don't how I can transfer my benefits to our daughter when the time comes.

Anybody in a similar situation that can help me out with advice or answers to my questions?
