I'm looking at enlisting in the fall, TXNG.

I had a Microdiscectomy 6 weeks ago for a ruptured disc, doc says I should be 100% in a week, and shouldn't have any more problems with it.

I've spoken with both a Captain and a SSG Medic at the unit I am interested in, and they have both said that it will be up to the doc at MEPs.

Wondering if any of you guys can share some insight?

Provided I make it through selection my MOS would be 18 series, if not then good ole 11b.

Thanks in advance.

Good luck.  That's a brand new SF unit.  I hope you get to be a part of it.

There is a few different things you will do at MEPS.  Last time I did it we had to do the duck walk.  Sometimes what they don't know won't hurt them.  But watch out can come and bite you in the a$$.  Know I guy that did that.  Lied to MEPS.  Then when he got to basic he reinjuried his back.  You make the decision.  Just remember this.  Is it really all worth it if your messed up for the rest of your life.

Yeah, I wouldn't lie to anybody. Did he have a microdiscectomy to repair a disc, or just a herniated disc that he omitted?

There are plenty of dudes in HSLD units that have had this procedure [while serving] and are doing just fine...initial entry is another story.

Bring ALL your medical documents to MEPS with you, including a follow-up examination/letter from our doctor saying the procedure was a success and you are 100% cleared for everything.

Looking at the OLD Silent Physician for Boston MEPS, it says a ruptured disc is a permanent disqualifying injury.  HOWEVER, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't join.  The doc could clear you, or more likely, you'll have to submit a waiver.  Then you can convince the reviewers, through medical docs and letters, that you'll be fine.

I'm not sure what the PULHES requirement for 18x is, though.

PULHES for SF is IIIIII. I went back in 18 months ago and had to provide all info on my shoulder surgery. They still sent me to an ortho specialist. The doc put me through a few exercises then asked me why I was there. I told him I wanted to join the NG and he said fine, you're in. Whatever you do, DO NOT LIE!!! No matter what you're told up front, there is a way through the medical screening. I was deadline DQ'd and got a waver. They need Soldiers so keep at it if you really want it.

Where are you at? I was thinking of joining the Reserves, but the Recruiter said that San Antonio has no Ranger or even an Infantry unit here. Told me that if I wanted to go Reserve I would have to re-class. Maybe I should look into this NG SF thing.
IM me if you wish.

No signifigant news to report, my business is sold, been in contact with the unit and they are hooking me up with a guard 'cruiter they work with.

Guys at the unit seem to think it's worth a shot, and have pretty much echoed what all of you have told me here.

I'll keep you all updated...and thanks again.

Met with the recruiter today, he is a hard charger...former 19D active and guard side, been to Iraq, was a cop in s. Texas.

He also likes a challenge.
