I'm can't decide which MOS is best for me. Maybe some here has some input that might help. I'm a computer guy and I'm deciding between... 25B - IT Specialist 25S - Satellite Communications Systems Operator I'm looking for which might have the best transition to civilian life after service. I know that good IT guys are in pretty high demand right now and will continue to do so. I'm not 100% sure about the SATCOM jobs, except that this is vital in current and future communications. My brother in law is stationed in at a NATO base in Belgium and he said there are many former 25S's there making big money in civilian positions. Any input is appreciated. -Mike |

25B will be best if you want to try later for a fully civilian sector job. 25S will be better if you want to transition to a military or contract civilian job. With either, do not rest on just your military training. As soon as you hit your first duty station, go down to the education center and start taking all the IT related courses you can. |
I agreed...I am in the Telecommunications industry (IP Telephony, Routing Switching) and having a college degree is good but having any industry certifications helps a WHOLE lot.... (Cisco CCIE, Juniper JNCIE etc..etc..) When I interview folks those that have the certifications and can demonstrate a working knowledge (experience) are the ones that we look for... |
That's my plan, to take as many courses as possible. I'm looking for those certifications as well. I have to make a decision soon, but I'm still stuck on which one may work out better. I have searched usajobs.com for IT positions around the DC metro area (where I'm originally from) and they are plentiful in many gov agencies/contractors. I like the SATCOM jobs but haven't been able to find as many job listings for that type of training/experience listed online. It's nice to see current vacant openings for a MOS that I'll be enlisting in so I know there will still be a demand for it in just a few years. |

One more question... If one were to inquire on a "High Demand MOS" and current "08' Enlistment Bonus" chart, where would one go online? I just took my ASVAB tonight, and the recruiter keeping brushing me off when I try to get that info. He keeps saying "take the test, then we'll figure it all out" I just want the info now. Can't find current info online. Most of it is outdated from May of 2007. |
