Alright, I am in a bind right now with my AKO.  My password expires in 6 days and in order to change it I have to be logged on with my CAC.  I don't have easy access to a card reader unless I were to make the hour drive to my unit, then I am not even positive they have one.  I thought about buying one, but can't even find one.  Where can I go to log in just long enough to change my password within the next 6 days before I get locked out?  Recruiters office maybe?

Just about every modern Army computer has a CAC reader.

The recruiter will have one, although if you're NG I'd go to an NG recruiter versus a RA/USAR recruiter.  Bring a referral, it will make him happier to help you.

Try your local Reserve or National Guard unit.  They always have AGR guys working.  Once you get it done get in the front leaning rest until your next password change.

Once it expires, you can keep using AKO by changing your PW every 3 days, until you have access to a reader again....

Yup, you can do a 3 day password about 10-12 times before AKO tells you to fuck off.

You can also get CAC card readers on Ebay for about $20, although it is quiet asanine that they require CAC login to change but do not provide CAC readers for home use. It is a pain to let guys do it even at the unit, because the damm USAR computers all require CAC login, so we had to rig a computer with 2 CAC readers so that someone with a network account can be logged in to allow the guys to access AKO to reset passwords. Needless to sat the damm civilian network admins loved it when we wanted to do that. All in all about 5-10 man hours a drill get wasted reseting AKO passwords. Yet another active Army regulation that doesn't affect them, but ends up cutting into AR/NG a good bit.

I just ordered my new laptop with a built in reader, they are getting more and more standard at least.

Well shit.  I just went to both the local Armory and the active duty recruiters and could not get hooked up.  When I got to the Armory, the recruiters were not there and the Admin NCO did not have a computer with a reader.  Said he had just sent his laptop in for service.  At the active duty recruiters, they had their laptops but also said they had to use their CACs to login to the computer and once removed it was not usable.  They didn't have an external reader there.  So there goes that idea.  I am about to order a damn reader off the net.  Waste of time and money?  Should I just try to get by with the 3 day changes until I go to drill on the 20th and hope I can get hooked up there?

ETA:  To hell with it, I went ahead and ordered a reader and am having it fedexed.  If it doesn't get here by Saturday, I'll deal with the 3 day resets until it does.  I don't feel like having this problem again the next time I have to change it.  may as well have it around.  sounds like it will be a pain in the ass to do at drill anyway.

Reading this makes me wish I picked up that box of CAC card readers they were selling at the last DRMO sale!
$5.00 for a box of 20!

Your CAC is programmed and activated, with your PIN, right?

That has do be done before you can use your home reader.

If you're of a rank where you will need to sign forms, like NCOERs, be sure to install the reader, the middleware, and the form software (Approvit and PureEdge) in the correct order. Trust me, it's picky about it. The instructions are on there somewhere, but you have to hunt around.

I've been in the same situation recently as I juts got off active duty.  Keep calling and resetting your password every three days.  Each time you call the help desk to reset, ask them if you can get a password for a longer time.  Eventually, you'll get someone who'll hook you up.  The last time I reset my password, they gave me one good for 150 days-that'll take me up until I no longer have AKO access.

We will soon find out if I remember my pin.  When I got my CAC I know I had to select a PIN,  I just have to hope I remember what it is.  I am pretty sure I know.  We'll see.

I already followed the directions on AKO about installing the middleware and it is done.  I am to the point where I just have to install the reader when it gets here.  Followed the directions to a T.

My card reader came in today.  Got it hooked up and downloaded the driver.  Popped in my CAC and logged in like a champ!  Got my password changed for 150 days.  Thanks for the help!

Good to hear---it sucks that people have to buy these readers.  Yet another example of the good idea fairy run amock.

Just to be curious are you running vista or XP?

Right now I only have my reader installed on my XP box, but I'd like to move it to vista eventually.

It's a pain in the ass for AD too...

The number of people who just can't figure out how to make the CAC login work/get the card registered/etc...
