This Friday I'm meeting with the recruiter to schedule the date for my ASVAB. I want to do really good on it so I've been searching the net for websites & books. I'd like any input I could get from you guys.

Take all the time you are given on the test. It may seem stupid or a waste of perfectly good time, but do it anyways. Its not like you will have to go anywhere in a hurry at MEPS anyways.

The practice tests are deliberately harder. Take them, and practice hard. The real ASVAB will seem very simple by comparison.

Keep in mind that your ASVAB score will come back to either help you, or haunt you in the future. Do the best you can on it.

I took the ASVAB at MEPS last week.

Do the practice tests at the military.com's site.

Remember, your ASVAB score is only good for 2 years, so if you decide to re-enlist or move into another specialty field, you'll have to take it again whether you did good on it the first time or not.

Good luck bud.

OP, there are a multitude of study books with practice tests at your local Barnes & Noble or Borders. Pick the one you like the best or can afford & read it & take all the practice exams. Or just take the online test with military.com. No need to rush into the ASVAB if you have doubts about your knowledge. While the test is not hard, there are portions that are not in your standard HS exit exam that you need to do well on like the EL portion. You want to have an EL score of 110 or higher, which is the mil equivalent to a 1000 on the SAT. This will pretty much guarantee the job placement of your choice provided you meet the rest of the qualifications. 32 is the minimum score IIRC & you don't want that.

Cover, At least when I was in, you did not have to retake the ASVAB to re-enlist within the same MOS. You may want to take it again to lat move if that particular MOS you want to move into requires a higher score, but you would be taking again at the request of the career planner anyway if he discovered ed a deficiency. It's not a requirement to re-enlist within the same field.

Have you taken any College standardized tests?  I dont know you personally but it probably wont be as hard as you think.  I took it a few months ago and got an AFQT of 98.  All my line scores were > 138 most of them being 142.  I didnt study for it just went and took it. The two guys that I took it with made a 32 and 35 and they seemed just about brain dead.  Dont stress too much over it.  Eat a good breakfast and you'll do fine.

Thank You to everyone that replied & all the good advice.

MHIDPA I have my AA degree I know its not much but I've had to take all the entrance & exit tests that goes along with college & I always did pretty well.

I'm going into the army to get college funding to continue my education but also so I can have a chance for some adventure.

What do I do with my family? I mean all my family is against my joining mom, brother, sister, & etc. It hurts knowing they aren't behind me so what do I do? Last but not least any advice to me when I do get into the army?

Obviously it's nice to have the backing & support of your family. However, if this is really what you want to do then by all means do it. You will gain a new family once in the service, especially if you go infantry. You will end up spending more time with them than you do your own family. Of course, theyy will move one as time passes, but you will have life long bonds in most cases. All you can do is explain your desire for military service to your fam & ask them for their support. They don't have to like it, but supporting you is a totally different animal & they need to step up & accept that obligation as fam members. If not, you can either deal with it or let it bum you out.

Actually the scores will be good for your entire enlistement. You MAY retake it to try to qualify for a different MOS.  If you do not enlist after taking the ASVAB OR take it in High School then the scores or only good for 2 years.  You may retest after 30days if you want to try to get a better score, However, if your score goes down you retain the most recent test score. You can take it three times (original, 30 days, 30 days) then you will have to wait 6 months to retest.

I just got home a little while ago from taking my asvab.

My AFQT Score is 95

Army composite scores are: GT 126, CL 131, CO 132, EL 131, FA 131, GM 132, MM 125, OF 129, SC 132, & ST 130.

Now I'm so happy with my score I don't know what to do next.

Did a hell of a lot better than me.

Congratulations!

Well, now go enlist!

Dont listen to the advice to study for the ASVAB.   That's cheating.

That's an oxymoron. What branch are you looking into & what are you wanting to get out of the military?

I'm gonna go Army I'm wanting to get money for college. My ultimate goal is to get a doctorate in Math & work for the NSA. I'm a very analytical guy & one of my heroes is Jack Ryan.

Great score!

I got an 82 and thought I did awesome.

Of course I am 37 and dropped out of high school in the 9th grade,(1986) no further education.

But like you, i did so well, now I can't decide on an MOS.  The only thing holding me back is my waiver for DWI.

Hell, you two did awesome compared to me. I graduated HS and I only got a 59... qualifies me as a moron.

I was nervous as hell and the recruiter even told me that I looked extremely nervous... it got real bad when I hit the Math parts. I've been out of School for about two years and I bought two books to study for it. They didn't work for me.

I have been thinking about retesting, but have been afraid to do so in fear of getting a worse score. I think I skipped some questions and filled in the wrong circles as well.

If I did it again I would probably look at the question, figure if I could answer it or not, and fill in an answer and not go back... lessens my chance of filling in the wrong circles.

The Science was easier in test (Infact, I thought it was extremely easy), but every other subtest was harder than the study book's sample tests.

I have my scores for the Army, I qualify for basically everything but Special Operations and Flight (GT of 104). I took the test with the Army, but I really want into the AF.

And to make things worse, the AF recruiter won't pull up my MAGE scores because I am not within the "weight zone". I still have about 20 lbs to go. He claims that his boss will give him a chewing for entering recruits into the computer that do not meet the standards for enlistment. So I still don't know if I qualify for what I want to do. I might have to retake the ASVAB for better scores. We shall see.

"best" is subjective.

What do you want to do?

Do you want to work with infantry and armor units, or do you want to work at the strategic level with civilian agencies?

Intel is a HUGE field encompassing satellite and other imagery, radios and computers, face to face interrogations, counter-intel, you name it.

If you aren't set on playing with tanks, take the DLAB and look into an MOS that will send you to language school.  Worst possible case is, you wash out and revert back to a non-language coded Intel MOS.

That's what I was looking at, but it didn't really jive with me.  Didn't sound interesting.  I was pretty hesitant about joining.  Then the Army recruiter started pressuring me like a used car salesman.  I stopped talking to them.

Then the Navy called and offered me nuclear powered subs.  Sounded good...

NSA, heh?

Have you looked into the Navy and AF intel jobs?  There guys do more of that type of work.

See USS Liberty thread, for an example, or - remember that plane that went down in China that created all the fuss a while back?

Then again, the Army sure seems to have a shortage of intel folks who understand pattern analysis - a mathematically oriented brain would be put to use, I hope.

MI might not be bad for you; and would help in your future goals. Make sure to read over each job with that field, I think 96B is the one you might want??? Maybe some MI guy will chime in. I am a Cav Scout so I've only talked to MI soldiers in passing.
