Hello. I have until COB Friday to fill out my new dream sheet. I've got 4.5 years left on the contract, and want to know what you'd suggest. Pretty much anything is open....and I really don't have much of an idea what, if anything is out there. I know the air force always needs cops, and an NCO here has suggested 1A7 airborne gunner. Thanks for any input. |
Either of those would be cool. If you like foreign languages you could always look at taking the DLAB (language ability test). |

have done a quick once-over, just based on name and any little inklings I may have. Suggestions for additional/instead-ofs, and thoughts on 1a7x1 aerial gunner 1c1x1 Air Traffic control [don't know anything about this, yet] 1n0x1 Ops intel 1W0X1 Weather - grey beret weather?? 2W2x1 - Nukes 3E5X1 - Engineering 3E6X1 - operations management EOD 3H0X1 Historian [??] 3N0X1 - Public Affairs [in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king?] Cop 3S2X1 - education and training - but this isn't a blue rope 8 series job, so I'm wondering what it entails. 5J0X1 - Paralegal Somewhat interested in some medical fields, but that's not necessarily a primary. |

Here's two unconventional choices: Para Rescue and Combat Controller. I was a Security Policeman 1985-1990. One of my buddies crosstrained into Combat Controller. Pararescue recruiting

Gunner is a sweet job. You get to work mechanical and electrical issues with the guns in-flight. On C-130's it is mostly ensuring the guns work properly, loading, moving brass, and looking for threats. Cop is cool too because you can be a Raven, combat arms, or investigations. "Don't get pissed, re-enlist" |

Don't be a cop! That job sucks. Thats why they augment it with people they drag out of other jobs. I always thought door gunner was interesting. Look into combat photography, public relations, historian, or chaplains assistant. Those are all interesting jobs, although all hard to get. Air traffic controller isn't as bad as the civilian world, but i'm sure it'll still make you go grey early. Don't be any kind ammo troop unless well.. just ask anyone that has to live with em. The guys that crew AWACs/JSTAR and all the cargo planes seem to enjoy it, although the hours aren't regular. ETA: all the enlisted people I knew in the hospital hated it, but they'd been doing it for 10+ years. |
I'll 2nd cop sucks, BTDT. Shitty days off, training on your days off, shitty deployments, dealing with stupid people and even worse, officers ![]() I probably would have stayed in if I could crosstrain out of LE but it wasnt an option. Gunner would be a kick in the ass tho |

The job to have is Contracting - 6C0X1. They have an SRB and you practically have a guaranteed job in the civilian/DoD world when you separate/retire. I know four contracting troops who have retired here in the past two years and all of them went right back to work in the same office. The only difference is they make more $$$ now, they don't wear their uniform and they don't deploy! If I knew 15 years ago what I know now, I would be in contracting instead of the personnel career field as I am now. |
i got a friend in nukes, and if i remember right he said there are like only 5 bases in the AF that you can get stationed, and non of them are that great. |
|
Im an SP and yes the job can suck at times, but every job in the AF has its own peculiar brand of bullshit. Deployments are when I get the most job satisfaction. I've had friends who've reclassed and they all said they missed being a cop. There have been days I've loved and hated the job. I would say the biggest part of the job that sucked was the leadership. But like most higher ranking people in the AF are all out for themselves, looking good and making rank. Not taking care of the troops and making sure the job gets done. I'm on the fence about reclassing, getting out or re-upping. I have a year and a half left, we'll see what happens. |
Being a grunt is the shit. The only downside is that all of the skills you learn translate into capitol felonies in the civvie world. Oh well. |
You made out fine. My brother is at Sheppard at this very moment, going through 2A6X6 tech school, if you want I can put you in touch with him. I think it's a great job, although my brother's first choice was my job (2A5X3B). The best thing about E&E, from an active duty standpoint, is that you have a kick ass number of assignments possible. You work both flightline and backshop (all the 2A6 jobs can work backshop or BS/FL) and you can work on absolutely every aircraft in the inventory, fighters, helos, heavies, bombers, etc. For us normal avionics guys we are broken down into three afscs, mine (heavies/helos/bombers), lawn dart jockeys (and UAVs and CV-22), and F-15/A-10/U-2. My other brother and sis-in law are F-15/A-10/U-2 avionics. From what my little bro says tech school has been pretty easy thus far, I don't think you'll have that much to worry about there. Sheppard sucks ass, but there is a lot of nice (off-limits) poon there for you prior service types. |

If you could put me in touch, I would truly appreciate it. High # of assignments - so, I could potentially go wherever the airframe goes? IOW, if I want boots in the sand, it's realistic? Chairborne - seriously, this week has been suck. Your insights have been quite helpful. Thank you. 2A5X3B - flight avionics? |
