As I ended a conversation with my future son-in-law over the phone the other day (currently a Marine LT.), I said "Semper Fi, Marine"-it just sorta came out-, to which he replied "ooh rah" and we rang off.

Later that evening, I got to wondering if this is proper considering I never served. Knowing what I know about the USMC and their personal regard on such things, is it not proper for a civilian to give salutations in such a way? I do not wish to be insulting, so any help here would be greatly appreciated. I consider myself an ignorant puke on such things, but not wanting to be an insulting one on top of it all.

Don't worry about it, honestly. He knows what you meant by it and appreciates the thought.

Good to go.

If that offends him, he must be one of those new-age, sensitive Marines.
