First, how do I go about getting a tank for my user name?
Second, I have a cousin who was recently discharged from the army. I have a suspicion he was dishonorably discharged after being AWOL after he happened to be at my house for several weeks for unexplainable reasons. Now after the discharge he is claiming to have received a Purple Heart in Iraq or a-Stan. But we never had any knowledge of him being deployed let alone injured. He says he didn't tell us about being deployed because he didn't want us to worry. Is there any way I can verify his alleged deployment and injury? I would love to be proven wrong but it is becoming a point of contention in our family. |

If he's telling the truth, he should have no issue producing his DD-214 member - 4 copy. It will tell you the character of his service (block 24) and awards (block 13 and continued in block 18 if necessary). If the Purple Heart isn't listed, he wasn't awarded it. If there is nothing that states to the effect "service in [insert country and date range here]" in block 18 then I would call BS on his overseas claims as well.

If he wants to prove it, then have him send for an official copy of his military records from the NPRC in St Louis.
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ Whenever someone's service is in doubt, I am always skeptical of any proof they provide. DD-214's can be easily faked. Have him request the records and the return opened in your presence. |

As a cousin you cannot, but a DD-214 is a document most if not all employers will want to see. The is a code on there called an "RE" code. Which is "Re-entry", if he has a 1 or 2 then he was discharged for something legitimate, a 3-4 or letters is not good.
This guy sounds like a bull shitter, kick him to the curb. |

Well he is unwilling to show documentation which makes me throw the bs flag anyway. Can I request his service record? Yes, you can. You can do it yourself to the NPRC, but the easier way is to go to this website and fill out the Report Form. The lady that runs it, Mary Shantag, will be able to request a redacted and abbreviated copy of his records. http://www.fakewarriors.org/reportform.php If he does have a service record and is no longer in, they will send it. |
