Hi,

I'm currently an AFROTC cadet. I was wondering if, after my 8 year total commitment (4 active 4 reserves I think?) is it possible to extend my contract purely as a Ready Reservist? Can I also do my 4 reserve years in the IRR?

Also, does anyone know if the AF recalls IRR guys back into Active status frequently?

Thanks. I'm not trying to cop out of serving my country more than I'm required to. It's just too early for me right now to say whether or not I'll stay in longer or get out when my time's up.

Either join or don't.

ETA: Ask your recruiter.

This is coming from the Army side...

Your 4 years Reserve commitment is to the IRR.  As an officer, your commission is for life and you can be potentially called back.  That said, it never really happens once you leave IRR.  Being called up on IRR is also pretty rare, especially these days when so many are trying to stay in.

With all that said, why do you want to be an officer?

You will be commissioned as a reserve officer on active duty. At the 4 year point you will most likely be offered a regular commission. If your active commitment is 4 years and you separate from active duty, you will lose your regular commission and take a reserve commission to serve in the IRR for the 4 years ( if that is the commitment you have ) at the end of your 4 years in the IRR, if you want to make a clean break you will have to write a letter resigning your commission. Officers are commissioned for life unless un-voluntarily separated or you resign.

If in the IRR and you do nothing, you will stay in the IRR.

Individuals in the IRR are activated individually based on the needs of the AF and the individual's AFSC ( job training )

My info is somewhat dated and may not be totally accurate if things have changed.

Yes, you can stay in the IRR, but understand, you can and most likely will get called up as an individual, in possibly an ADSW status.  I deployed the most as an IRR Marine.

I have not heard of this happening to anyone I know since they've separated. The majority of those people are Security Forces, so it is a safe bet it doesn't happen to other AFSCs either.

All officers receive a regular commission now upon entry on active duty.  (this changed about 6-ish years ago)

If you can...Look up IRR recuiting scam 2003 or 2004.  I served in the NG with a 6 active 2 incactive contract from 1998-2004.  After my active years were done I was called within 2 months by recruiters telling me I better join back or I was going to Iraq.  I did not join back and did not go to Iraq.

If I had been called out of the IRR then fine.  But I was just a 13B E-4, so that is a very common MOS and rank.

Just watch your ass with the IRR and do some research before any recruiter tries to get you to sign your "John Hancock" on anything with the IRR

Good luck man.
