Some of you may know I have been in my first responder/emergency medical responder class, as well as my FF one class at the local fd. I realize EMR isn't the best but its better than he skills I currently possess. I recently discovered I could no longer attend the 2 weekly sessions, been in the class about a month or so. However, I have two options.
A. Attempt to do the class independently, and then turn in work take exams do practicals on weekends, (Asst. Chief Advised against this, because he figures it would be very hard for us both) and 2. I could take an EMT Basic Class starting February, running Saturday and Sunday every week, 8 hours, a day, plus practical and written sometime in there, and attempt the EMT B certification. I originally planned on this but wasn't gonna take the EMR, because of the fact that it would be a duplication of it, and no sense taking two classes covering the same thing at one time. So should I try to get the asst chief to reverse his opinion on the indpt. study, attempt the emt basic, or just drop both the medical aspects and pick up the Fire stuff? Thanks |

Go for the EMT-B over Responder any day. In my experience people who only have the Responder or equivalent training seem to be over confident and often operate outside their abilities and protocols. In particular I have one individual in my department that likes to play doctor and generally just manages to get in the way etc.
EMT-B will at least give you a basic understanding and you will be far more helpful. Anyone can be taught to run a clipboard, which is typically what non-EMTs do in my experience, whether they are Responder or not. YMMV |
