Yeah, that looks fucking toolish. Maybe if he was doing UC work, but certainly not as a patrolman.

We had a bit of that crap around here a few years back ('03 to '05, pre-K,) 'till Compass nixed it.  Folks who had that hairstyle could keep it, so long as garrison hat would completely cover it and they wore the hat at all times––-which was impossible, since many judges will toss a contempt ruling or you for not doffing your hat in court.

The question is this-

Did he do it because he liked them or did he do it because he wanted to address the different standard?

Looks like he was trying to make a point.

my thoughts exactly. He looks like a jackass and I could not take him serious whether as a citizen or as a fellow officer.

Yup.  Something about a massive uniform manual violation comes to mind as well.

Sounds like he was trying to make a point, an apparently valid one judging from what the article says is happening.

Work in the area. Gossip of the department. Last I heard, officer is thinking about suing.

from the news article the officer definately sounds like a solid stand up cop. It mentions that he was a marine that did two tours in Iraq and survived two IED attacks / earned his CIB. Other officers who were interviewed said that hes a good hardworking cop and kind you wanted to have around when the SHTF. It just sounds to me like he is trying to draw attention to a double standard with uniform restrictions within department policy. If he has been able to document other black officers wearing cornrows for a significant period of time without reprimand, i would find it hard to see how his agency will be able to seriously burn him on this deal.

Personally I think they are not professional, however our AA officers are allowed to wear them so why not the white guy? We also have a order concerning shaving. If you can get a letter from your doctor stating you get 'bumps' (I can't remeber the official term) you don't have to shave.

We have the same scam on our job with the shaving.

its my dept...

its very difficult to explain to those who don't work in the dept...but i'll attempt to cliff it since I have the inner scoop.

cliffs:

haircut secondary to officer's cover
black/hispanic officers allowed to wear corn's without issue
white guy does it to prove a point
gets desked for two days with pending suspension/fronting
takes corn's out
sues city for $$$$$$$$$$$$$
not equal for race inside dept...

we had a similar thing where a female muslim officer sued the city after she was prohibited from wearing her muslim cowl/cape/moomoo whatever it is called on duty...

welcome to philly.

edit:

he's a former marine (if you can see the military decoration above his badge), served a tour in the sandbox (or so I am told), so you can understand his mentality...

So what is the opinion of the patrolmen of the department?  Do they think he is doing this to spotlight the uneven playing field or doing it for the $ from suing the city?

(trying to wear the burka peep-hole headgear as a uniform cop is a far cry from having a goofy hair-do)

He's making a point, the departments "Standards" apply to all.
