Just thought I would tap into the knowledge and experiences of those here who either have used or maybe use on a regular basis the asp handcuffs.

Someone I know said they could score a couple pairs for me but I have never used them so just wondering what people think of them.

Sounds like they would be hinged and in black.  I kind of like the idea of being able to unlock them from either side.

Anyway, thanks guys for any info!  Just curious to see what you guys think of them.

Nothing special IMO.  Kinda big.  The unlock from both sides is kinda nice though.

I think ill stick with my peerless.  Although the aluminum ones are pretty sweet if u can find some smooth ones.

Been using a pair of the Asp for a couple of years. No complaints. A bit lighter than my Peerless or Hyatt. Got mine in orange so I can keep track of them. The ability to open from both sides is actually a very nice feature in my opinion.
Asp just came out with lightweights, and intend to try a pair for pocket carry.

FYI: One officer told me that you can bend the swinging arm far enough to completely miss the locking device. He showed me what he was talking about.

Everyone try it, put a little pressure on the swing arm and see what happens.

That is why I carry a backup pair of cuffs, just in case. I have seen an out of control juvenile with retard strength break the chain on a pair of S&W cuffs. I don't think the ASP cuffs are any less secure than any other type of cuff.

Very true. I've carried a pair for several years and this has happened to me on more than one occasion. I carry a pair of S&W hinged as well for just in case but the ASP's are my primary pair

Never used them. Peerless and S&W cuffs are all I have ever used.

Some do not like the ambi key feature, they like to keep keyhole side away from hands.  Ambi keyhole is nice if you're playing the suspect and someone didn't do a good search...

The double bar is more easily bent together than standard cuffs and ASP single cuff case for them is noticeably thicker than standard cuff case.  Good sized people who wear cuffs in the middle of back know what this means.

I'd like to see some tests on the Hiatt/Safariland alloy cuffs.

Im not a big fan. I have a set and they are too big with the molded plastic.

Id rather just carry smith and wesson hinged.

How easy is it to defeat the double lock on a hard surface?  I can beat the dl on peerless 700's pretty easily, but my wrists take a beating.

I have some, they are alright. I went back to S&W hinges. I don't like the extra bulky cuff cases vs standard size.

I don't use them but a lot of people on my department do. Only two probelms I have seem with them. The swing arm is a little too flexible and they do not work well when cuffing someone to an eyebolt. Had one of our people use a pair to secure an inmate to the floor with them and he "cheese grated" the hell out of them. The cuffs still work great but look a little gnarled up now.

I had a pair, but the single arm was *way* too easy to swing off center and miss the locking bar.
I've heard they've gotten better. I'll wait till I get a chance to see a new pair close up.

Everyone near me seems to carry Peerless and S&W.  I still prefer my Hyatts hinged.  I've still got a pair of S&W chain as backup on my belt.

I've got an aluminum set of Hyatts around here somewhere.

i've got one chain, one hinged ASP cuff, and i like em.  They're light, and the double key hole thing is a nice feature.  Plus, they can go on a little bit snugger IMHO because they're beveled and feel... softer? than other cuffs do.  I dont worry about the flexing arm because i've just practiced w/ em a lot and never had a problem in the field using them for over a year.  G2G IMHO.

The single bar flexing around the double bar is the reason why I don't like them.  Once is enough for me!

fine for controlled situations in the jail.

shite for a lone road officer fighting a resisting subject into them.

the benefits of double sided keyholes and an insignificant weight savings need to be weighed...seriously.

that one failure to gain control may cost more than you can pay.

Might be ok for a patrol officer, but double sided keyholes are a bad idea ina corrections environment.  Its tough enough keeping certain inmates in single sided double locked cuffs, Ive seen videos of inmates defeating double locked cuffs with the black box installed in under a minute.
