| We dictate our reports, so sometimes they come back with the surnames in all caps, sometimes not. Depends on the typist. I never change it from the way it comes back, but I would say the majority of my reports do not have caped surnames throughout. All caps would drive me nuts! |
| Hand written reports are done in all cap block letters. Typed reports are done just like I type, though some folks insist on doing the JONES and SMITH and get away with it. Of course, the guidelines suggest that if you simply must highlight surnames, the tecnically approved way is to type Smith and Jones. |

On a side note, I once reviewed the report of a fellow property crimes man who was about 60 at the time and not at all computer or internet savvy, and who typed his reports in all caps (and got away with it because our Sergeant knew he knew what he was doing outside of the computer world,) and I, after reading it for a bit, asked him "Why the fuck are you shouting?"
Maybe you had to be there, but it was hilarious, so I am told, watching me explain to him what I meant––since he had been sitting there quietly waiting for me to finish reading. |

It always seems weird to see senior police types, who are making a pretty good buck per hour, hunt and peck typing. I suspect that ALL CAPS thing is a hold over from when most men could not type. I think that is less common now that everyone has a computer. |

ATTENTION MEN. VIM HERE.
SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT ALL THAT TOUCHY FEELY CRAP. CAPS ARE A-OK. GIRLY MEN SUCH AAS E E CUMMINGS WRITE IN LOWERCASE. WHAT DID IT GET HIM? NOTHING. THREE FAILED MARRIAGES. HE COULDN'T SATISFY THEM. THERE'S A LESSON THERE, MEN. (ETA: JUST NOTICED THIS ISN'T GD –– IT CAME UP ON MY ACTIVES –– HOPE YOU TAKE IT WITH A LAUGH AND NOT AS DISRESPECT. SERIOUSLY.) |

It's a carryover from the old typewriter days - back when there was no difference between an O and a Zero, or a One and a lowercase-L, back when many computerized systems had no lowercase at all. |
| Some guys do. With the new reporting system we have, we don't have to input a lot of the information, it's filled in from LEADS information from the dispatch screen... so most of my reports come out with the fields filled in IN ALL CAPS and the narrative typed lowercase. |
| I used to write them that way. At my agency it used to be a choice of the individual officer. When I got promoted and started reviewing them though it was much easier to read reports typed normally and not in caps. To me it looks like the whole report is screaming as you are reading it in caps. |

DOES ANYONE ELSE WRITE ALL THEIR REPORTS IN CAPS LOCK? MY PD HAS ALWAYS DONE IT AND IT CARRIES OVER TO EVERYTHING WE DO, MDC'S, MEMO'S, ALL REPORTS, AND SO FORTH. I PERSONALLY LOVE THE CAPS LOCK WORLD, THERE IS SO MUCH LESS TO MESS UP. http://lc-capslock.org/images/capslock.jpg Funny, a guy in my squad uses all caps and he started in Texas. |

| I leave caps lock on for all the stuff that goes in boxes - name address, etc, but in my narratives I type correctly. For anything handwritten my writing is a mix of short caps and lowercase. We have a few lazy people that leave caps lock on for their narratives too. |

My Sgt. would prob. send my report back to me if I typed it in all caps Aggravetes the piss out of me when the caps lock is left on the keyb oards. Defense Attorneys around my area have tried to use that as a route to embarass guys on the stand. of course with some of the nit-nats i work with, as long as their report is marginally readable and articulate i wont complain about the caps. |

In my dept at least, the guys who are let's say "Spelling and grammar Challenged" are the ones who have a tendency to use all Caps, and the Attys pick up on that, as soon as they see all caps they figure they're dealing with one of the less-educated guys (Or Girls) and immediately start trying to be intellectual Bullies. We have a HUGE problem here in that 99% of cases never go to trial, they are pled out, i have Kids that have NEVER testified on the municipal level who's first experience facing a Defense Attorney is in Superior Court, which they are completely unprepared for. |

We mostly type in ALL CAPS as well. I can type quite fast with normal grammar and spelling. When I applied to be a dispatcher, they for the first time required a typing speed of 35wpm. I estimated 80wpm on my application and they laughed. I threw out a speed of 88wpm with errors, which was corrected to like 78wpm on the test and they did not laugh. Granted, that's not fast for a secretary, but most of these people were the hunters and peckers (quite a few of them were peckers, indeed).
So, as the youngest, most computer-literate member of my squad, guess who ends up typing all my partners' reports at 630am after a long midnight shift? YOU GUESSED IT FELLAS! (actually, I make fun of their hunting and pecking while waiting to use the computer that they get pissed off and sling the keyboard at me, with a vehement YOU DO IT THEN, ASSHOLE!) |

I was trained as a typist before I actually entered High School, so no.
It might take me marginally longer to write, but it's far more readable. On the counterpoint, do you have any guys who use no caps? EX: called to scene for battery. found victim seted on curb... |
