Just got a copy of some LE rag or other at work today. Had a new cruiser on the cover I had never seen.
Carbon Motors E7. A purpose built patrol car. Pretty damn cool from what I can see, and about time. I doubt it's the end all cruiser but I thought it was pretty slick. E7 Cruiser |

How much will the E7 cost?
Although pricing will not be announced until 2009, our target is to ensure that the initial purchase price of Carbon’s purpose-built vehicle will be comparable to what law enforcement agencies are currently paying for a retail vehicle and after-market equipment combined. The total cost of ownership is where agencies stand to save a generous sum of money due to the E7’s superior engineering, durability and efficiency. Reserve yours today to receive advanced notification of pricing. Anything that costs more than a Crown Vic is not going to get bought at my place. |

I guess we'll see with regards to the durability, etc. I know plenty of cops that can destroy a cruiser in short order. |

I also love being able to run license/warrant checks over the radio in perfect syntax/format and listen to MDT-ified department guys struggle when they have to

We have MDTs and I use mine to the fullest extent possible. Yes, I can still talk on the raido just fine. It annoys me when somebody takes up a good chunk of air time rather than simply sending a message to the dispatcher (ie warrant confirmations, etc.) With new MDT and CAD software, alot of things you HAD to do over the radio has been elminated. We use to have to "end" our shift over the radio. Now you simply log-off the MDT and you are done. There are still people that still do it over the air. The best one was when my partner was in a foot pursuit and got cut off by another element going home. |

Well I would say the guy going home is an idiot for stepping on your partner while he is in a foot pursuit. I would love to have an MDT to use. My traffic enforcement would be 10x better because I could run plates all day and not have to worry about hogging the radio. |

what is that car based on? I mean like shared platforms? It has to be sharing some parts with other cars. Based on specs and avaliability, I would say the GM Caddy CTS platform or the Australian G8/monaro platform. Just based on looks, it looks like it has Honda Accord under all that, but it is RWD, so probably not.
The website says that it is purpose built and does not share a platform, but there are major manufactuer parts bin parts in there. Hell, even Lamborghini uses parts from other "regular" cars in their cars for things like door handles, buttons, etc. That looks like a Honda steering wheel and IP and the headlights look like Honda also. The steering column is NOT a GM or Chrysler column for sure. The center IP and counsole is throwing me off, but probably a custom part for the various cop-gadgets in there. I always thought that Subaru Legacies would make good cruisers in the North East. I know that in the UK, they use Subarus often for patrol cars. |
| According to the Toyota dealership, The Honolulu Police Dept adopted 12 hybrid Camrys. They are part of an experiment to see if they will save money for the fleet in fuel costs. The guy i talked to said they have something like 220hp. Not bad but i wonder if they can keep up with hi-speed pursuits? |

We have gone to the complete no pusuit policy, unless of course you are the chief and running for sheriff, then you find a stolen car and chase it for an hour. |
| I'd be surprised if we ever see this car in production. I'm not sure how they will be able to tool up an entire production facility for limited sales in a limited market. They're not going to sell any of these things unless they can keep the costs down so that a budget person see's it as a less expensive option to the CV. |

The low bidder generally being awarded the contract. Unless this new car can be competative in pricing with the other manufacturers, then I don't see them being around for long. Cool looking car though... |

Apparently this vehicle is already in the production phase. The company info states that the vehicle is comparable in price to a refitted civilian unit.
It makes sense to have a purpose built police cruiser in my opinion. It's a shame one hasn't come along before now. The needs of law enforcement are specific, just as they are for the military, who purpose build modern vehicles to fit the job. I don't know if the E7 will ever truely get off the ground but it's a great start. I hope to see more to follow. To get the car as far as it's come, you would have to think that the designers thought about maintenance issues, and end of life service for the cars. It's not like you could sell one back to the public. My guess is they have some sort of buy back program and refurbish the units. Crown Vics have alot of history, but I'd trade up to the E7 in a second. |

Our Motor shop said they cost just as much as a well equip Crown Vic and they don't have to be equipped with the lights and radios etc. They come set up to go, just need decals. |
