Planned Mountie pay increases rolled back

Updated Fri. Dec. 12 2008 8:31 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

The government is rolling back planned pay increases for members of the RCMP by 0.5 per cent over the next two years, CTV News has learned.

The Mounties were expecting pay increases of 2 per cent in 2009 and 2010 as well as a 1.5 per cent market adjustment in 2009. Instead the pay increases are being decreased to 1.5 per cent and there will be no market adjustment.

Commissioner William Elliott broke the news to the force members in an email sent Friday afternoon.

"We have now been advised that on December 11, 2008, (the) Treasury Board modified its previous decision dated June 19, 2008, on RCMP member's compensation by amending the rates of pay for the second and third years of the most recent three-year compensation arrangement to limit the previously approved increase to 1.5 per cent," Elliott wrote.

"I know you will be disappointed at this development."

Sources told CTV that cabinet was not informed of the Treasury Board decision. The Conservatives are worried that the decision could blow back on them since many police officers are believed to be Tory supporters.

Under Canadian law the RCMP cannot engage in collective bargaining and pay is determined by the Treasury Board. According to the RCMP website, a constable with three-years experience is paid $74,539 a year.

The force is planning to hire 1,700 new cadets each year for the next few years as many officers are hitting retirement age. In June, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that RCMP cadets would start being paid for their 24 weeks of training in an effort to entice recruits.

This was a unilateral decision of the civil service beancounters to cut the pay of our national police force, without any government approval or even involvement!

Not only is the base salary going down, they're also canceling the cost of living adjustment.

No union. No collective bargaining at all. Just living on the whims of some federal douchebag. Must have gotten a ticket on their way to work, or else is pissed off because their kid got caught with some weed, maybe? Somebody, quick, remind me why I love this job!

Look I know it's a bitch when your promised raise does not come through (ask me how I know) but your 3 year man makes more than a P/O at top salary does here. Hell, it's only 5K less than a Sergeant at top pay.

I know it sucks but times are tight.  Money is tight as well and something has to be cut.  I don't know what the cost of living is there but the pay seems pretty generous....depending on how expensive things are there.

let see, our last 3 year contract we got a 0% raise for all three years. I'd love if they offered a 2% and then told me I was only getting a 1.5 LOL.

Sucks when they do not come through with what is promised though.

ETA: just did a google search (atleast the site that I found) says they make 66K by the second year on the job and 72K by the fourth year.

I have 13years on and will end up making about 80K this year, but that included about 20k in OT. We top out in 5 years, vest in 10 and can retire in 20 with a 3% muliplier. Oh we do not get cost of living increases at our place either. What is the RCMP retirement like? just curious.

Wish I made as much as a 3 year constable.

Last week during my annual review my manager informed me that merit increases for this year had been approved and I was receiving a pay increase starting next month.  Then yesterday a company announcement was made stating all merit increases were on indefinite hold (meaning we'll never see them).
In different times I would have grumbled loudly about it.  But as stated to some colleagues, and all were in agreement, in this economy I am happy to have my job and have nothing to complain about.

At least you have free health care.

It does suck and I'm sorry.  But, times are tough and during tough times, government has to cut back.  Wish our government understood the need to slow spending!!

We were on a three year plan to increase pay.  That was 4 years ago and we MIGHT get the second year pay raise this coming year.

Pensions - 20 years with penalty, 24 years plus 1 day = no penalty. Pension is 2% per year of service, average of best 5 years with no OT included. Pension is also static until a certain age until it starts to creep ahead with inflation according to some formula of age and service.

Oh and don't forget that our "Free" heath care means that we loose over 50% of our gross income to taxes of one form or another; and our dollar is worth 82% of yours, so our cost of living is higher.

I wish you would explain that to the growing majority of BONEHEADS south of your border.
It seems more and more people down here have been nipping at the Kool-Aid and are beginning to think Canadian
Health care is the BOMB.  I pay for my own healthcare... ALL OF IT.  It now costs $975 per month for my wife & I.
That's an HMO plan... not some super no deductible covers everything plan.

When Barrack & Nancy wave their magic wand & turn the water to wine... I will cancel our corporate Health Benefit and
let you all pay it for me.  Lets see how long that lasts, cause that's what ALL the small businesses I know are gonna do.
Rather then fix the cause of the problem, the answer is to lay on another layer of bureaucracy.  That has always worked
out real swell in the past.

P.S.  NOT trying to hijack but you hit a raw nerve.

$72539 CAN = ~$59480 USD.  Still an excellent salary for only three years on the job.  I've got almost 12 years in and don't make anywhere close to that.  Still it REALLY sucks to be told you are getting a raise, any raise, and then the carpet is yanked out from under your feet...
