My department currently issues def-tec OC which I've never had any issues with. Some local agencies have been switching to the fox labs 5.3 and sabre blue IIRC. Has anyone actually experienced any differences between brands and their effects on suspects? Any info/feedback is appreciated. |
We used to carry an off brand that I dont really recall, but it was about 2 million SHU's. We recently upgraded to the Fox 5.3. Let me tell you that is some of the nastiest foul stuff on the planet. I could eat our old stuff compared to the Fox. I sprayed 2 with the old stuff and 3 with the new Fox and the reactions were like night and day. I sprayed a "gentleman" who had been sprayed by another agency at another time and he even commented on how our "mace" burned worse than the other departments. I guess that means Fox 5.3 is perp approved!!!

I worked for a department that used freeze+P and I had to get sprayed with it. It was some nasty stuff. BUT, I am now employed by our State Police and am currently in the State Police Academy training to be a Trooper. We carry Sabre and I was sprayed by it several weeks ago and let me tell you that has to be the worst stuff out there. I have never had a reaction to OC spray like I did with Sabre. I have respect for Sabre. |

We use Punch II. We just switched to this because it's water based and will not combust with our Tasers. I gotta say this stuff isn't as potent as the stuff we used before. Both are 2,000,000 SHU's. The old stuff felt like 10 million hot needles in your eyes. The other night I was hit with the Punch II while trying to subdue a suspect. It burnt a little, but after two good squints I was able to open my eyes and see clearly. It made my nose run a little and I coughed a couple of times. I equated it with getting sunscreen in my eye. It had no affect what so ever on the suspect. |
I agree on Vexor - my issue with it was that it took a while to start working and took forever to get over - and it all ended up on the instructor. We carry Mk4 now - but my preference was and is Freeze+P for overall usage. I even like the fact that the CS in it makes area denial possible. My sole issue with Freeze+P is the A70 propellant/solvent and flammability. I was taught and trained others that it was non-flammable by factory reps. A70 is a highly refined petroleum distillate like kerosene. I got an education from a student who set a puddle on fire. The 360 valve was great too. Most of the agencies around here have shied away from it because of the one in a million chance that someone gets tazed and goes BBQ. |
| Issued sabre red.....great stuff....The not sure if they all have the red die, but it also helped us id a vehicle used in a robbery after the officer sprayed the driver and the driver's seat.....found vehicle with windows down, stained seat, airing out at susp's mom's house.... |
| Only been around the Fox 5.3 and man did it screw me up during training. It would reactivate every time I got moisture on the affected areas of my skin. Did this for three or four days. I'm not really putting in a plug for it though. It's been effective about 50% of the time in varying situations and levels of aggressiveness. Few times even made the mope more aggressive. |
