I am taking the written exam next month for Border Patrol can anyone provide me information on what to study hard on for the exam?  I am prior Military and I am a Dispatcher for a Police Department (5 years).

Just get a good nights sleep and go over the test prep stuff they give you. You will be fine.

Go to the website at the link and spend a lot of time there.  Good luck.

Review the test booklet they gave you. If you don't speak fluent Spanish, practice the artificial language section very hard. That's where most people bomb.

I am sure that things have changed from when I went through processing back in 1997.  The test was pretty easy to me but then again I have always done well on standardized testing.  As long as you answer questions honestly instead of what you think they want, you'll do fine.

Many people fail because they are unable to maintain the assumed mindset of the imaginary 'perfect' officer/agent taking the test for you.

Don't just skim through the question!  One missed 'Never' or 'Must' and you've lost the whole context of the question.  You have plenty of time to take the test without cheating yourself by rushing through it.  That mentioned, you also can't stay too long on one question.  Even if you don't have a clue as to what they're looking for, a guess from 5 choices gives you a 20% shot at being right.  That can give you more time for questions where you might be able to eliminate one or two answers and that will give you much better odds when you still don't feel confident on the correct choice.

As for prepping your mind, anything that will help you to recall detail.  Try those 'Find the differences between these two pictures' puzzles.  If someone is willing to help, try looking at pictures in home/style magazines; give yourself two minutes to remember as much as you can about the living room/kitchen/whatever and then have a friend ask you questions about the details of the room like what color were the throw pillows on the couch, what time was on the clock on the wall, or what was the name of the coffee table book. I know it sounds silly but anything that will train your mind to retain details will assist in the memory sections of the test.

The ALT or Artificial Language Test was developed by linguists to approximate the skills necessary to learn a language like Spanish, meaning similar in the way they conjugate verbs and pluralize nouns.  I still remember a Verlek is a Male Eagle, don't ask me why!  LOL!  Anyway, if you have received the study guide, don't memorize it! You'll be wasting your time as the test has some subtle differences and all that time you spent memorizing instead of studying how the changes work from male to female nouns, etc. could hurt you.  However, do spend as much time as you can getting to understand and be comfortable with the way each word is modified based on it's need such as singular to plural, present tense to past tense, etc.

Good luck!

ETA A big +1 on the Honor First website. I'll also suggest the Border Patrol Hiring Board on Delphi Forums. That place is the biggest internet gathering of BPAs and Green-wearing hopefuls you ever find!
