First off let me say that this is no big deal at all but just got me real curious.

I'm going in for my medical review for Memphis PD next week and they tell me that for several days before the exam I cant drink and no streneous exercise.  Of course the no drinking I get, blood work and all, plus I dont drink anyways.  But whats got me stumped is the no exercise part, for the life of me I cant think of anything that exercising would affect on a physical, any one got a quess or know?

Like I said no big deal at all, so I dont work out for a few days, I could use the rest anyways.

Just curious.

My only thought is maybe if you powerlift the microtearing of your muscles could throw off certain enzymes in the boold, resulting in a false reading.

ETA - I've never been told that during any entrance, annual or haz-mat physical, but obviously YMMV.

Stress to your body, pain, etc. can skew the readings. Some of the proteins are supposed to change in your urine also.

In some people strenuous exercise causes them to pass a little microscopic blood in the urine .It doesn't hurt them but it would be a reason to re-test the urine at another time to make sure it was exercise induced and not an everyday thing. VERY hard exercise can cause some muscle breakdown that will show up in urine and blood work and can look like some very real problems. I think they are looking to keep false positives for real medical problems at a minimum. SS

Are they going to check spinal alignment and flexibility.  Maybe it is to ensure you have no injury and reduction in movement and flexibility in addition to he chemistry.

Its common for one to be instructed to avoid exercise before a urinalysis exam. Strenuous exercise has been shown to result in some urinalysis tests coming back positive for protein and/or blood in the urine. Blood in the urine is especially common among runners. Its to avoid false positives.

Excessive weight lifting will cause a rise in your Liver function tests.

I worked out with a buddy who was a bit more "advanced" than I was.  3 days later I had some blood tests done and my ALT/AST were elevated.  I had to spend a week thinking about every poke or possible BBP exposure I had before I could take another set of LFT.

I kept thinking I had HEP C.  I googled it and found a half dozen studies about vigorous exercise could result in an elevation.  Thankfully they were normal the next week, along with all the other tests.

That was a shitty week to say the least.

So will drinking and taking Tylenol.

I cannot give blood anymore because the last time I did I had started a heavy weightlifting routine, I had gotten really drunk a few days(I don't drink that much) before and I ate Tylenol like candy on a daily basis. All these things can stress your liver. My liver enzyme profile ended up 5 points above what the Redcross allows when they test it. Now I'm blacklisted for life. I called them to find out what was up when I got the letter and they told me that it's not uncommon to have people fail this test, especially athletes. The person I talked to said they have many marathon runners fail it. They told me it's an older test(the liver enzyme test) that they used to use to red flag for Hepatits.

Makes sense huh? To not allow the people who are healthy and fit to give blood.

Stay safe...

One of the blood lab values for a heart attack can be thrown off by simple exercise and bruising. Along with that value there are other values that wouldn't correspond and would show that lone number to be not indicative of heart tissue damage. But, for some cautionary types that may be enough to feel that a cardiac workup is needed.

Time it right so you can hit the gym right after the test and ride that endorphin high back to the house.
