Officer found not liable in death of mentally ill man in 2002

A federal jury this morning found a Springfield police officer not liable for the death in April 2002 of a mentally ill man.

The jury found that Officer Jason Oliver had not used excessive force in trying to subdue Andrew Sallenger, 35, who died about 24 hours after struggling with three police officers in his Eastdale Avenue home.

Another jury last year determined the other two officers — now-retired Sgt. James Zimmerman and detective Brian Oakes — were not responsible for Sallenger’s death. It couldn’t reach a conclusion on Oliver, prompting the retrial. The officers had responded when the family called police for help dealing with Sallenger the evening of the incident.

Attorneys for both sides gave closing arguments Wednesday afternoon.

Toughest fight I ever had was with a 15 year old mentally retarded kid. He did a pushup with three officers on his back. After we finally got him cuffed we were exhausted..

It seems  that most mental cases have unreal strength.

Retard strenght is some tough shit.....tackled some retard strength in the middle of the street, with two other officers there and we got it under control fast.....but one officer is a 5/11 260 lb/ brn belt in jiu jitsu 0fficer and we had to actually work for 3 seconds to cuff him.

retard strength is real and should not be  mocked.
