| Any firearms instructors out there willing to share their shotgun courses of fire? I am putting together a new program and looking for suggestions. |

ours is pretty simple... 10 yd line - 5 rounds standing and kneeling 15 yd line - 5 rounds standing and kneeling with some stupid "combat" loading technique that nobody in their right mind would use or remember all 00 buck - we practiced slugs in the academy from the 25 and 40, but haven't used them since. |

Our Shotgun training is fairly involved and really what matters. Qualification course is probably just to make the lawyers happy. The cliff notes version of the qual course- Phase 1= one target at 25 yards and two targets at 15 yards. Shotgun in condition 2 with only four rounds of Buckshot loaded. Select a slug, load, and engage 25 yard target then engage the 15 yard targets with buckshot x2 each. Since you only had four rounds to start with, and you loose one while select loading the slug, you will run dry and have to reload to finish the phase. 20 seconds total. All pellets on target. (IPSC type targets) Phase 2= one target at 25 yards, two targets at 15 yards, and one target at 10 yards. Shotgun in condition 2 with only four rounds of Buckshot. Shoot the 15 and 10 yard targets with buck, then select a slug and shoot the 25 yard target, then shoot the 15 and 10 yard targets with buck again. 30 seconds total. All pellets on target. No safety violations, proper loading and manipulation, correct target engagement, blah, blah, yada, yada. Your training program is much more important than the Qualification course. HOWEVER, to often training programs are geared toward passing the qual, so if you are in a position to establish a Qual course, incorporate as many skills as possible, that way your dept will HAVE to train the skills or guys won’t pass. |

our course: 2 targets 1 for slugs 1 for 00 buck start from cover 50 yrd line. 5- 00 buck in weapon, and 2- slugs in side saddle. on start run to 25 yrd line and chamber and fire 2 rds 00 buck. tactically retreat to 50 yrd line and cover. ( weapon on safe!) instructor goes with shooter. remove 00 buck from chamber put slug in and close, put 00 buck in tube followed by remaining slug. ( tactical reload ) student should have a slug in chamber, next round up should be a slug followed by 3 00 buck. fire two slugs at 50 yrds. run up to 15 yrd line and fire the remaining 3 00 buck this can be done with a time limit, we use 75 sec. |
