Does anyone have a lesson plan for a three day patrol / full auto rifle course, they would share? I'm putting together a class and am trying to see what the average department standards are out there. I plan to submit the plan to my chain of command in three weeks. The goal of the course is to certify officers for their own semi auto rifles and certify three sergeants for full auto. Thanks. SK |

Just my .02........ FA is of very limited use. Not saying there isn't a use for it....but it's limited. Further, certifying Sgt's for use in the "extra special stuff" is opening up the door for problems. We did that in my dept at first.....only Sgt's had the sage, the pepperball, the taser, the rifle, etc. A first line supervisors job is just that.....to supervise. If he's in the fight, he's not supervising. Do you know why the LAPD had no problems with the criminal trial of Rodney King and bit the big one on the civil suit? (besides political pressure)...... It's because the Sgt was the one using the stun gun on King and not supervising the whole situation (that was a HUGE issue at the trial). Yes there were other issues but this is one that caused a huge payday. I think you really need to examin the FA policy. Either get rid of it all together, or revamp it to where everyone is trained on it. If I "need it" then I "need it" right then and now....I don't need to wait for a Sgt to come rolling in. We went away from this mentality and you should examine this as well. Hope all goes well for you. And lastly, if I may. Please be sure to include plenty of transition drills. Lots of people who teach sub-gun, shotgun, carbine and the such often leave out transition drills or touch on it maybe for 5 minutes. It's a very important skill. That and positional shooting and reloads. Go heavy on the different positions and movement. Think "what I am really going to use this for" then make up the drills. Good luck |

In my department the sergeant is usually your partner. I'm not worried about who has full auto or not. My goal is to have every one trained with a patrol rifle. Let the policy makers worry about who "has the toys" as long as everyone has the opertunity to have a patrol rifle in their toolbox. You have to understand, if we don't get a certification course for the patrol rifles, we may loose them as a tool. At least the sergeant is letting me including semi autos in the plan and not just issuing the full autos to the sergeants. sk |
